Possibly dumb questions

Slings for infant bucket seats in restaurants, yay or nay? I don't even remember being offered one with V, and the past 2 times we've eaten out they offer it. The first place made it sound like it would click in, but that could potentially damage the seat, right? Like on shopping carts. Tonight it was just a strap that would go across. I tried to ask for a booth, so I could just set G on the inside, but they said no high chairs in booths.

Re: Possibly dumb questions

  • And second question now since I still can't make paragraphs on the iPad. I made a carseat poncho for V. Essentially fleece with a hole in it. I put the back over the top of the seat, and straps under the front. DH thought it would be a strangulation hazard if we were in an accident and it got caught or whatnot. I just kinda thought it would come up and off over his chin, but he didn't think so. Then I just told him he can take the whole thing off if he's really worried about it.

  • My experience with the first is that the slings are like hammocks that you set the car seat on.....it doesn't click in like a shopping cart......and sometimes they just turn the high chair upside down.....I often just had ds2's car seat on the floor so I could rock him if I needed to and/or held him while I ate. On the second question, I would think the fabric would tear if it caught and couldn't move forward with him.....if strangulation is a concern can you make it a V neck or add fasteners to make the neckline bigger?

I put G on the floor the first time in spite of everyone pressuring me otherwise. Tonight even DH was saying to use it, so I did. He thought people worried about Illinois or dropping something on G ifhe'll were on the floor. But in retrospect, I don't see how that keeps anything off of him. The poncho has a hole, and then I cut 4 notches to make it easier to get over his head. He has a big head. Would that b similar to the v nck idea?
  • I never liked the idea of slings at Restraunts. I was worried about food being passed over top of her. The one time I couldn't put the seat in the booth I just held her the whole time.

  • Upside down high chairs and slings are very tippy-I say no way to that! And the hot food being passed over baby......:(

We always sat the carrier on the booth seat next to one of us, on a chair pushed up to the table, or left clipped on a stroller (if room enough).

The poncho that can slip over his head wouldn't worry me.

The  tippiness is what I was afraid of, and that's why I was adamant against the sling at the one restaurant over the weekend. And suddenly the server was all worried about spilling coffee on baby, but again, I don't see how the sling would solve that. Tonight I tried to ask for a booth when the sling was mentioned again, but V needed a place to sit and we were told no high chairs at the booth. It was busy, and I don't think there was room enough for the stroller.

We've done the chair pushed against a table, but I wonder if that's any safer than the sling?
  • I don't mind the slings made for car seat, I just don't like the flipped over high chair. That being said my kid hated his car seat, so I only used one once. I normally had to hold him while I ate.

  • We used the sling thing once when C was very new and would still just hang in the car seat. It was a specific sling/hammock for carseats, not an upside down highchair or anything. It was super convenient and not tippy. But now that he hates his car seat I'm very happy he can just use a highchair. We actually just got back from an impromptu family lunch out. :)

  • Yeah, I'm anti-sling.  They seem unstable & put baby in a weird place, possibly to get spilled on.  Could V use a booster yet?  I can't remember how big he is, but we started using one in a pinch when G was around 20 months or so.  That would work in a booth.

We have V in a booster sometimes at home. But we can strap him in if we need to, and it's attached to the chair. The first place we went to that offered the sling we had him in a booster, and he did ok. He kinda fell off a couple times, or tries to get up and stand sometimes too. We were in a booth, so that part was NBD I suppose, since he just fell onto the padded seat. He's a pretty squirmy and active kid.
  • Am I the only one who has no idea what these slings are? We did the upside down high chair once but we were in a corner and it was against the wall. Usually we just passed Z around when we went out to eat because we were usually with friends and someone always wanted to hold him. If it was just the 3 of us we usually put the car seat in the booth or the floor. I don't see how putting the car seat on the floor would be a concern for spilling just don't pour coffee over the baby! It's no different than if the baby was in a high chair.

Like I said, with V no restaurant ever offered. G is not even 3mo yet, and the last two times we've gone out they've offered the sling. They even kept pushing it when I tried to decline it. I don't know if it's jus because we have a toddler in tow too, or what, but I don't see how it made anything easier or better.
  • We used a sling once, but it was really tippy, so I held onto the car seat handle the entire meal. :( The only time we've been out to eat with both boys, I just held L on my lap. We were at a table, so I could turn my chair to get some extra room for him.
