nst offered after due date?

So, my due date is today, and no sign of baby :( my question is, if baby doesn't come on her own dr will induce next monday night, which is 8 days past due date. I read that sometimes after your duedate dr's will perform nst's or bio profiles to check on baby but I also read that risks begin to occur after 42 weeks. Anyone else have any input on this? I won't even be seeing my regular dr at 40 week appt, he has boards and don't want to bring up extra tests if they really aren't necessary ...

At my doctor's office, they do a NST at 41w, and if that's good they'll let you go to 42w before inducing.

(DS was born at 40w6d. This baby is currently still cooking at 41w1d, I have a NST tomorrow.)

  • The midwifery center I go to starts doing NST and ultrasounds at 41 weeks in order to ensure you're good to continue to 42 weeks. Then at 42 weeks they recommend induction and are required by the state to transfer patients to an OB. Friday I had my first ultrasound to check fluid levels and NST to monitor baby, Monday I go back in and it might become daily after that. I can't remember at this point but they did stress that at any point from 40 weeks on if I felt anything was off to let them know right away.
  • Sounds like I'm not missing anything then, he is just inducing at 41 weeks instead.

  • Seems pretty common for a low risk pregnancy to wait until 41 weeks. If anything changes between now and Monday, such as not feeling 10 movements in two hours, then they'd probably look at doing some of the tests sooner.
  • My OB/midwife practice automatically performs the NST the first appointment after your due date. I will be 40+3 on Tuesday (when I go for my appointments), so they scheduled a NST as a matter of course.

  • My doctors office starts doing NST at 40 weeks exactly and every appointment after that. But I know a friend that didn't have one at all and she went into labor 8 days late. Sounds like it just depends on the doctors office. My office will let me go to about 42 weeks before inducing though.
  • Same as @MmmPopcorn‌ & @kfirstiun‌ - my office does them the first appt after your due date
  • Do you guys think I should ask for one then? I know if she doesn't come by then I'll be induced at 8 days past due.I guess I can always just ask at my appointment on Thursday.
