Re: Babys eating patterns discussion

  • My boy dropped weight so I'm having to supplement formula along with my breastmilk, which hasn't fully come in yet.

Right now I'm finding overnights 11p-6a being the most difficult. He wants to cluster feed, even with the formula. Any advice on how to stop the clustering--can you?

Right now our goal is to have him nurse at least 10 times a day. We are trying every 2-2.5hrs during the day and attempting a 3-3.5hr stretch over night. Obviously failing over night since he wants to cluster feed then.

  • I am sort of bf on demand at this time and probably won't attempt to get him more scheduled for another month or so. I don't let him go longer than 2.5-3 hours between feeds during the day and 3-3.5 hours at night. I haven't had him formally re weighed, so that is why I still wake him up overnight.

Beckham is eating a lot! He is gaining an oz or 2 a day. He is eating every 2 to 3 hours for about 20 minutes. Nighttime is our hardest time. All he wants to do is eat and I think it is mainly for comfort. Around 7 in the morning is when he will eat last and he will allow me to sleep until 10ish.

Edit to say I am BF!

  • We are also nursing on demand. She is a cluster Eater for sure. She will eat 30 min out of each hour for 3 hours, and then sleep for 3. I'm really trying to break this habbit.

If we leave the house and she is in her car seat she falls asleep and won't wake.up until we are home. So I'm trying not to leave the house because then she will be up eating all night long.

  • Every 2-3 hours unless she gets hungry beforehand. Up until a couple days ago she was a lazy eater and would fall asleep within minutes of feeding and had a shallow latch. I tried all the tricks to keep her awake but it usually didn't work. She lost weight by her first appointment and was advised to supplement. I did until my milk came in last week. I was obsessing about not using a bottle and formula when necessary that I didn't get to enjoy her first week. To keep my sanity, I nurse during the day and bottle feed my BM at night and pump.

Her 2 week appointment is tomorrow so hopefully she's been gaining weight.

  • I don't necessarily believe in putting our little guy on a schedule just yet, so I just feed him when he wants to eat. Usually around 3 oz of a combination of pumped milk and formula every 3-4 hours. He's gained 1 lb 3 oz since birth 3 weeks ago...so it's working for us.

  • I exclusively pump now bc I could never tell how much my baby was eating and when I thought she was done nursing after 30 minutes, she'd cry for food 20 minutes later. Now I feed her abt 4 ounces every three hours and it only takes 15-20 minutes for her to eat and be full.

Nighttime is hard bc I'm tired (as you all probably are!) so getting up to feed from bottle and pump takes awhile.
  • we are FF and he wants to eat every 3-3.5 hr on cue. he will sometimes sleep for up to 4.5 hrs.
he is back above his birthweight as of our 2w appointment, so we aren't waking him to eat.

  • We are FFing about 2-3oz every 3-4 hours. If they aren't up and ready to eat at 4 hours we wake them up. If one is up and wanting to eat the other is offered a feeding as well. Trying to keep them on the same schedule so I don't lose my mind! So far so good.

  • The only time we seem to have trouble is the 10 pm to midnight hours. Nothing we do seems to calm her down or allow her to sleep. She won't eat, won't sleep, won't get comfy on either of our chests. So far the only thing that semi works is the bouncer/sing combo. When she falls asleep there she is good until 2/2:30 feeding and then will sleep in her rnp.

We have been FF 2 oz every 2-3 hours. My milk finally started coming in today (5 days later) so now she gets my milk plus the difference in F to make what she wants. She still doesn't eat past 2 oz most of the time. I'm pumping and then bottle feeding which allows me to know what she is getting.

She seems to love the breast milk and sucks it down so quickly. Makes me really happy and I can't wait for her to be able to get more then an oz at every feeding.
