Small tear in placenta

Hello gals, I'm 20 weeks along and started spotting yesterday. My OB saw me right away and noticed a small tear in the placenta. He told me not to worry about it and simply allow it to heal by resting. I'm on bed rest now and will be going to see a diagnostic specialist this upcoming week. I've been doing tons of research (which he told me not too) and it only keeps freaking me out. I don't think the proper term is an "abruption." Baby has been very active and I've had no spotting today. Is anyone else going through something similar now, or have gone through it? I just want peace of mind. Doc strongly believes the tear should heal by the end of this week if I completely rest. It's hard not to worry especially when it's your first baby...

Re: Small tear in placenta

  • Haven't been through it but it sounds scary. Try to follow dr orders and rest rest rest (and stay off google!) Hoping that it all heals nicely by weeks end. Sending you good nights! Keep us posted

I and currently 16 weeks. I had the same exact thing at 13 weeks. The doctor told me bed rest and pelvic rest. I did the same thing as you looked everything up on it I could even though they told me not to. Thankfully the my hole is already closed and I am no longer on bed rest! My hole was 24mm. Hopping your hole closes just as fast! Sending good thoughts and prayers your way!

  • No advice, but FX that it heals quickly and you have no more problems. @RhoPA1109 I disagree with you and the doc on this one, I think doing your homework is a good idea, as long as it helps you figure out what questions you might need to ask or reassures you. If it is just serving to freak you out more, step away from the google.

ETA any doctor who tells me not to research my own health can suck it.

    Totally agree!!
And prayers for you @katrod22‌! Rest up!!
  • My colleague has been going through the same thing. Listen to your doctor. Rest and let it heal. My colleague is now 37 weeks and has had multiple abruptions. Lucky for you they have diagnosed your problem early. For her it was not diagnosed until her 3rd bleed so she had much more difficulty healing quickly.

    Wishing you the best!
  • No experience but I hope you heal fast

No experience, but sending good wishes for fast healing.

    Also, stay off google!
I will admit I'm the worst to give that advice. One time while in the hospital with my son the doctor told me a test they were running that he was positive would come back negative, and told me not to research it. He wasn't out of the room 5 minutes before I had google running. I'm terrible.

The point of my story is that I understand listening to the doctor and just waiting is much easier said than done. It is hard not to jump the gun and research everything that can go wrong. But please try, it will save you a lot of worry!

edited to say I do agree with the above posts that researching can be a good thing because it can help you know what questions to ask. But researching too early in the game often leads to focusing on the worst case scenario and everything that can go wrong. I think what you really want are stories of mild cases like yours...but you're finding scary stories instead. Step away.
  • No experience but my thoughts and prayers are with you. Listen to your doctor! Hope you start feeling better soon!
