Books for natural childbirth?

Since many of you ladies have already been through childbirth, I was wondering if anyone has any books to recommend? I'd like to have an unmedicated birth, with as little medical interventions as possible, and know I need to mentally prepare myself as much as possible. I've read so much online already, but feel like I should get to reading a good book to help! I've been thinking of Ina May Gaskin's Guide to childbirth... Has anyone read it?

Re: Books for natural childbirth?

  • Yes! Fantastic book, for those wanting to go unmediated or not.. Explains a lot about the process of childbirth and leaves you feeling empowered. Highly recommend it! Also.. I recommend a doula. Best thing I ever did to have an unmediated delivery.

  • Hahah I meant unMEDicated.
  • I 2nd reading Ina May's book & having a doula. I'll also add use a midwife rather than an OB if you can. But be prepared for anything :)
  • I read the hypnobirthing book. I was induced for health reasons and got an epi. Those pit contractions! the hypnosis birthing didn't work for me but some people really get into it. Anyway I'm still glad I read it because they go over different breathing techniques that made me feel ready.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! Definitely hoping not to get pitocin, but I do know things happen! Definitely going in with an open mind and knowing that the goal is to get her out safely, however that may be.
  • La leche has a great book about breast feeding, including chapters that discuss pumping, weening and going back to work.
