Can we discuss bras?

I am on the fence about purchasing more bras right now.  I purchased 2 bras at the end of 1st tri because I was busting out of my normal bras like a lot. Well I am getting close to being at that point again, (damn boobs)  but I feel like they are just going to quickly out grow whatever I buy and that it won't be too long before I am purchasing some nursing bras and that buying bras right now is a waste of money, and lets be honest I loathe the process.

So tell me, have you purchased new bras this pregnancy? how mane and how many different sizes? Are you looking to purchase some more before Feb or are you trying to hold out? Am I the only one who hates wasting money on a piece of functional lingerie that will probably only be good for a month or two?

I saw somewhere to purchase nursing bras about a month before your due date, can I start wearing them then? or is that ridiculous?

For those big busted BTDT mom's what nursing bars do you recommend? My mom said they sucked and were a waist of money for her, but given that I am her youngest I am going to presume things have improved in the last 30 years.

Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.

Re: Can we discuss bras?

  • I almost don't have the right to comment on this thread since I have barely A boobs pre-pregnancy, but they have grown to full Bs.

A friend told me to buy cheap bras to get me through until after the babies are born since they will grow so much more.  That's my plan.  Cheap bras for now to get me through, but good nursing bras once all my milk (hopefully) comes in.

  • I have a few C's from a previous pregnancy but got 3 new B's to fit. I went up from small A's to a full B and intend to hit a full C or possibly a D nursing this time around. It's nice to have 1 or 2 bras that fit since you're in each size for each fire a few months at least and have to shrink back down.

  • Buy as cheap as possible! When your milk comes in your boobs will change. I have bought more bras during pregnancy/post pregnancy/post nursing than I have my entire life!
  • My boobs pregnancy were about a 36 DD I'm at about an F or G. The underwire has REALLY been hurting my ribs so I decided to go with sports bras and bras without an underwire... I just buy the biggest size kohls has....sad...but true

  • I'm trying to get by with my D bras but I think I may need to buy DDs by the end of this pregnancy. Since it's still fairly easy to find this size in kohls, I'll probably hit the clearance rack and not care what it looks like lol.

  • I'm lurking here...  also wondering about nursing bras further down the road.  So far I've bought bras twice (got 3 each time in basic colours: white, black, nude) and am sure I'll be buying more soon.  I saw some wire free ones at target and was wondering if those are comfy.  I don't want to fork over money at VS again.

  • Well pre-prenancy I was a 34DDD (or an e) I got a 36DDD because it is easier to find but now I should be 36G I am guessing. Well actually I am still a 34 band but that is so hard to find. And this is the ultimate reason I dread shopping for bras.

  • I purchased just one and it's a nursing bra. I also bought bra extenders that have been AMAZING! And they're only about $2 at motherhood maternity.
  • With my first I went from a B 34 to a C 36, so far the C's are still working but I can tell it's only a matter of time :( I'm going to go cheap until I've established nursing then get resized

  • I am a 36C pre pregnancy and bought some coobie bras off of amazon. They are seamless sports bras and I love them. I think they'll work for nursing.

  • I was actually trying to figure out if the bras i bought during first trimester shrank in the wash or if my boobs grew more.  I guess I have my answer, and I'll probably bite the bullet soon and go get a few more.  Rocking the boob overhang is getting pretty annoying.
  • Bra extenders are great. I go to motherhood maternity and get fitted mid preg, and then have them add on a cup size because I need more space for when I'm nursing. I buy 2-3 and make sure they are nursing bras.

I also buy 2-3 of the sport style nursing bras, cheap from target, for when I just want to be comfy. They're more forgiving on size, too.

I'm on my sixth preg and this approach has worked well for me.

I have outgrown all my bras too, but decided to invest in only 2 to get me hopefully to the end because I didn't want to spend a ton on bras that will likely go back to being too big next year. I went up a full cup size and strap size. I bought simple nude and black ones from VS. Same type and size, like a lined t-shirt bra.... definitely nothing from their "sexy" , "angel", "add 2 cup sizes" silly lines!

I also bought one (huge) sports bra
  • This is my first pregnancy and I went from a 32d to idk what now. I tried a 36c as the store person told me around the end of my first trimester they were fine now but I since am doing like you and stuffing myself into them. They are too tight, so I tried those coobie bras that are suppose to last whole pregnancy and through nursing ... Well I doubt that'll happen I fit in the bra but the band is too tight and in general they are just uncomfortable. I'm at a loss on what to do also, will prob break down n buy something cheap to get through until I need nursing bras which I was recommended to buy Atleast one size up from when you originally buy them ... But who knows.
  • I'm still wearing my regular push up bras so yes the nips are peaking over the top. I wore a nursing bra the other day...at one point I was in the elevator and looked in the mirror and saw two giant nipples staring at me! Without padding the threat of giant hard nipples is serious!

  • I had people recommend to buy nursing bras while pregnant. I was fitted today and had to go one size up but have room to grow! Not sure if works for everyone, or will end up working for me for me for that matter, but hopefully it's a couple less bras to buy!
  • I have gone from a 34b to a 36d. I never thought my boobs would be so big! I had to get new bras quickly, and those first few no longer fit. Now all that feels comfortable is the motherhood sport style nursing bras. Currently getting away with a large size, hoping I don't have to jump to extra large. Right now I feel like I still have room to grow but am well supported.
  • I have gone from a 32 D to a 32DDD or 34 DD sort of. It's annoying! I'm all boob right now! I bought one super pretty one from VS after spending the last few months switching between two super stretchy nursing bras that are comfy but not pretty and two cheapo's from Target that I violently hate wearing. Love my one from VS but why I bought it in red I'll never know. Also ordered two nursing bras without underwire from Hot Milk Lingerie and just got them last week. They are really comfy and well designed and the cups are made with a bit of stretch to accommodate fluctuating boobies. They are pretty though pricey so I'm hoping I can make it through with what I have. Been considering purchasing a few new sports bras from VS as well since it's getting out of control when I'm teaching yoga these days
  • I understand the problem of finding reasonably priced bras in larger cup sizes. I wearing DD before my first pregnancy, went up to DDD with my daughter, and now with my second I am wearing a G. The best price I have seen is $22 for "Leading Lady: Front-Close Wire-Free" bras. The downside is you can't use a bra extender with them because of the front close.
  • So these bra extenders.. Those just help with band not cup size right? Because this is most definitely a cup size issue.

  • I bought one 34G after the first trimester is so ugly and cost me over 100$ . I refuse to buy another ugly expensive bra so I will tape my tits down it need be. I miss my d cups and all my cute bras.
  • I was wondering the same thing. I started out with a 36ddd and I honestly haven't bought a size up yet. I should have...... But let's be honest I'm cheap and also didn't want to go to the "ugly wall" at Lane Bryant. I've been rocking sports bras and double boob for awhile. Lol. I'm hoping to just buy nursing bras... I haven't ever heard of bra extenders!!!!!! I may go get some of those asap!

I have a similar problem. I now measure 32 F. Ridiculous! I went to motherhood maternity and bought some stretchy bras that are sold as small, med, and large instead of by band and cup size. The staff recommended them as bras that I'll be able to use when my milk comes in as they are meant to fit a variety of cup sizes. It's working so far...

This was me with my first two pregnancies (10 and 11 years ago). I just went to Motherhood and bought a sleep bra and some good nursing bras (couldn't go without at all) and started wearing nursing bras while pregnant. This time is so different since I had a reduction last year (thinking we were done....).

And yes, the big girl bras will ALWAYS be expensive. I commiserate with you.
  • I have decided to just wait it out and buy nursing bras when I have to. I am a 34DD pre-pregnancy and now I am falling out of the two E's I bought...I usually go to Fredericks of Hollywood because they have really comfortable and full figure sizes. They aren't super crazy expensive either

  • I feel your pain @aggiebug‌! 34DDD pre-pregnancy. I just went in to Dillard's and got remeasured and they said to go with a 32H. Yes, I cried. I ended up buying two maidenform tshirt style bras with a 34 band. I'm thinking that I might just try some nursing tanks to start in addition to some cheapy sports bras from target. I'm jealous that you guys have MM and Fredrick's close by! I'm going to need to go out of town to find nursing bras.

  • I started out as a 32C and bought two 34DD bras in the first fri cause I was popping out of them. Sadly, those are getting pretty uncomfortable, but I'm going to try to stick it out as long as possible. I tried to buy a nursing bra a size larger at MM a few months ago and now it's too snug. I will definitely wait till the milk comes in to buy nursing bras.
  • I am going to have to buy nursing bras sooner than I want. My cup size has not really changed at all--my ribs have expanded a bit, though. I went from being a 36DD to a 38D (the cup size at Victories Secret is actually the same in those two sizes, go figure.) The trouble? My boobs can get really sore sometimes, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to find a wireless bra that is also a DD. I found one, and the boning int he side of it was SO UNCOMFORTABLE. So, I will probably live with my old bras until January, then try to buy a few nursing bras. I plan to buy a size up because I know they will get bigger once there is a milk factory in there.

  • If they have a destination maternity near you, I recommend checking them out for bras.  I am a 38DDD pre-pregnancy.  I bought some 40E's there on a buy 3 get 1 free sale and they are still fitting comfortably.  I bought nursing bras that are lacy and pretty, as well as some "sleeper" bras because they have no under wire and I have no patience.  The bras were about $35 each, so on the sale, $100 got me 4 bras, which is better than I can do with my regular bras.  The store also really pampers pregnant women.  They bring you apple juice and a granola bar and have you sit while a personal shopper pulls things for you based on your description.

  • I think nursing bras are a good idea. I have always loved them and there's really not a huge difference between a nursing bra and a regular bra (except they are so much more convenient for nursing). Everyone will probably experience a temporary surge in cup size for the first couple weeks of engorgement when milk comes in, but many people will "calm down" after that. And while you still will be larger than pre-pregnancy, you may not be as large as those first couple weeks so that bras purchased now may very well fit again later. A caveat--I say this having a little experience...that my last couple babies I have been bigger for longer than I had previously. So it can change from pregnancy to pregnancy. Before I had my 1st I was a 36c. I surged to a 38D but within a few weeks was ok wearing a C cup again. I was 20. After I weaned (to my husband's dismay), I went down to a 34A. It was crazy! Last baby I had I was a 40D by the end of my ph and when I started nursing. I eventually lost enough weight to go down to 38 but I stayed a D cup until she was almost a year old. As we started nursing less I dropped to a C cup but it was the longest I had ever stayed at a D. I can't afford expensive, good bras, but I can't wear the cheapest ones either. For me motherhood maternity has been the best that I can afford and the minimum that I can expect.
  • I started by rocking the bra band extenders, but then the wires started bothering me. For weeks now all I've been wearing is genie bras from Amazon. I just bought XL's even though the recommendation for me was a L. I'm the first to admit that I don't look very perky, lol, but they are sure comfortable. I'm trying to wait as long as possible to get nursing bras.

Yes, bra extenders give you another couple of inches in band size. Your rib cage gets bigger as baby pushes up. So, for example, if I got fitted now at 6 months and measured as a 36D, I might go ahead and buy a 36E and some bra extenders. The extenders will give me up to 38 inches around (which I will need by the end) and then the cup size is big for when I'm nursing (although, RIGHT when my milk comes in for the first few days I'll be bigger than an E and that's when I wear the sport style nursing bra).
  • I went from a b cup to a c cup before I ever realized I was pregnant and I got a few bras but now barely any of them fit me. I don't really wanna buy anymore but I might have to
  • Interesting because I was thinking it is that time again for me too.

Especially in the last few weeks, a lot of my maternity bras I purchased at the beginning of the pregnancy have been feeling snug. The underwire bras I can't wear anymore because they pinch the bottom parts and it hurts even after I take them off. I like the sports bras that I got from Motherhood Maternity so I'm wondering if I could get a size bigger in that, or maybe just go to Old Navy or Target and buy a larger size sports bra to save some money. I can't imagine how it's going to be once the kid's here and breastfeeding begins! :/
  • I bought new bras during my last pregnancy because I couldn't fit in my old ones. This pregnancy, I wear those bras, or I wear the bras that I bought to wear as regular non-nursing bras after my boobs settled down to an H.

My nursing bras were bravado... 34 J/K... not kidding.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • I am normally a size 32DD or 34D, so I feel your pain and know how difficult it is to find reasonably priced bras in the first place. I also hate shopping for them and hate spending money on something I'll only get a few months use out of. That being said, at about 22 weeks I finally had to break down and get new ones bc I was so uncomfortable . I found them at Target, and I highly recommend you check there. I found a 34DDD (my new size) nursing bra on clearance for $3. I also got a regular 36DD for $15 and even though it's slightly large for me I figure I'll have room to grow. I wouldn't put off getting at least one new bra because, let's face it, you wear it all day long and a comfortable one makes all the difference in the world. I was surprised to find those larger sizes at Target, especially for such low prices. You might also try using a sports bra for now.
