Don't know baby weight?

Just wondering if others' OB or MW aren't "weighing" baby?  I haven't been told what my baby weighs (also not sure how they could tell until baby comes out??) but I keep seeing posts about x or y is LOs weight.  So just checking to see if I'm the only one.  Considering all the posts worrying about low or high birth weight, I figure I'd rather not know.

  • Even those of us who "know" through recent ultrasound appointments, aren't really sure, because those numbers can be off. It can be subjective depending on who is measuring, how they place the markers, etc.

Bottom line, don't worry about it. You'll know for sure when your LO gets here.
  • My OB gives me a broad estimate (like low-mid 7lbs) when she feels my belly and baby but then she was my Ob for my first and right about DD being high 6s low 7s so it's probably from practice.

still never gotten an exact number for weight..unless you count mine  :P

  • I know they can try and determine weight based off ultrasound measurements, but those are supposed to be notoriously inaccurate.
  • I have an estimate on LO's weight because I go for growth scans due to gestational diabetes. Even so, the dr told me those measurements can be off by 13oz both ways .....
  • No clue what he weighs. My OB felt around and said "probably about 6lbs right now so maybe about 8ish". Lol!

With my first two, I had ultrasounds later in the game because of other concerns. The techs always told me their guesstimates. I never took them too seriously.
  • I had u/s weight estimates at 36+ weeks with #1 and 2. My providers also gave EFW via Leopold maneuver during the last 2-3 weeks. My midwives with #3 and 4 relied on the maneuver to get a guesstimate. They've all been pretty accurate, ultrasound and Leopold, but there are many variables and factors involved. My last midwife was spot on. It's more accurate when baby is vertex and there isn't a fluid discrepancy that can throw off palpation.

I'm not due for anymore ultrasounds, but she does provide EFW at appts. At yesterday's visit she told me low range of 8 lbs, give or take. If you're curious about baby's size and you don't have an ultrasound coming up you can always inquire about Leopold maneuver to get an estimation. Some are better trained at it than others, however.

  • No idea. Last u/s was at 19 wk and probably won't be getting another one. Last time at my 40wk appt my OB estimated she was around 8lb just by feeling from the outside. DD1 was 7lb.

  • I have no clue and probably won't until he's born. There just hasn't been a reason (thankfully!) for them to need to do another ultrasound since 20 weeks so I guess I get to be surprised. ;)

  • Like others have said, it's just an estimate. They figured mine from the u/s measurements. I don't think they should be taken as completely accurate, just an estimate.
    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • The only reason I have an estimate is because of the extra u/s from my L&D scare a few weeks ago. Two separate u/s's at that time measured pretty close together that she was around 5lbs 7oz at that time. That said, I've heard of the inaccuracy of those measurements, so we'll see what happens when she comes out. Just so long as she's not a 10lb baby. Please don't give me a 10lb baby...

  • The only reason I'd have an estimate is because I'm a participant in a university study, and ultrasounds are part of the study at 30 and 34 weeks. None from my doc since 18 weeks.

  • I have never gotten a weight estimate. Not with DD1 or with this one. Don't really care either since they are wrong 98% of the time. We'll find out how big she is when she's born.

  • Nope - no weight for me either. I am having BPP's weekly and I asked my ultrasound tech if she could tell me the "estimated weight" figuring she would be able to since they are checking everything else. She told me that my doctor did not request a weight measurement, therefore she is not checking it.

I am not to concerned - I am glad that my doctor isn't worried about the weight enough to have it checked. Plus like everyone else said it is definitely not a real number and would probably cause more panic then needed.
  • This morning I got the push my belly around, probably 6ish now, prob high 7s when I get around to delivering. First time they'd done that, though.

  • Honestly these numbers are just guesses anyways! DD was supposed to be over 9 pounds she was 6pds 6 ounces! Even if I had a number I would take it as a grain of salt!
  • I have regular us because twins, but haven't had one since 33 weeks. Won't have another. Dr says based on that last us she's guessing they should be 6-7 lbs, but that's pretty broad.

  • I don't know and I won't have another ultrasound unless I go too far past my due date. I had one of those with DD (to check fluid) and they told me she was going to be "huge" and "definitely over 10 lbs." She was 8 lbs 13 oz a few days later.

    This.

AFAIK, only high-risk pregnancies only get so many ultrasounds that you can reasonably trust the weight estimate (GD, IUGR, etc.) It also depends if your regular OB/MW is doing them or specialists, IMO. I had weekly BPPs and monthly growth scans with all three pregnancies at my MFM office, and my final ones gave me a 1/2 pound range of estimated delivery weight for the girls, and they were both within that range. I have no reason to believe they're off for this one either, especially since he's been tracking on the same curve.

  • I have one more ultrasound today to check her growth- they are more worried about internal organs and her head though. I assume they'll give me an estimate, but you it's just that an estimate. Be thankful you haven't had to have any other U/S it is nerve wracking when you are getting them b/c they have concerns.
  • I have no idea.  I just go by the estimates in my baby book.  Although it feels like she weighs a hell of a lot more than they are saying.

  • I wasn't expecting another U/S at all. My last one was at 19 weeks but at my appointment Tuesday he was "concerned" she was going to be too big so he ordered a growth scan which I had yesterday. I didn't complain because it meant I got to see her little face.

  • Mine always tell me that it's a estimate and could be off by 3 lbs up or down.so far my first 3 babies were estimated at 7 lbs and came out at almost 11lbs each. With this one it's a different daddy/new husband but doctor is going to check weight at 37 weeks to see if we are heading towards another big one if so I will be induced early cause I'm tiny and it really hurts pushing out these 11lbs babies instead of c sections
  • I had a 20 week u/s that said i was ahead and a 2nd one last week that said he was in the 48th percentile at 4lbs 2oz. I take all with a grain of salt but just glad that I am out of the woods for a big baby discussion with my ob. I was already ready for my response if the ob talked about inducing or c section if he measured big again and it would be no.

It really hurts pushing out a 7 pounder too. Just sayin'.

  • I actually asked how accurate they are.

If you have a random US with not much else to compare it to, or one of the portable US machines, not very accurate.

If you're having growth scans every 2 weeks with the high end machines like my MFM uses, they're much more accurate because it is accumulative and they're estimating off a series of scans done every few weeks.

    You know what else hurts?

Unplanned c-sections from failed inductions because your baby wasn't ready. Also, NICU hurts.
  • So much pain.

    image

  • they haven't done this for me and if i had the option i would refuse. As everyone else has said ultrasound estimates of weight are very inaccurate. And i have heard of cases where OBs have used this as a reason to induce saying that the baby will be too big to birth (and often it turns out the baby is much smaller when it actually comes out).

That being said when the midwife last did a check on the baby's position just feeling my belly she did tell me she though it was a smaller baby. But that is likely to be even more inaccurate than an ultrasound.
