Breastfeeding

Away from DS for about six hours, hurt supply?

I didn't think anything about this until I read another thread that mentioned if you skip a feeding you can mess up your supply. Well DH and I were given tickets to a football game for early Christmas gift. DS will be two months old when we go. I have been EBF and doing some pumping in between for a stash when we want a night out. This will be the longest stretch away and clearly I won't have access to pump while out. Suggestions? Am I going to hurt my supply a ton if I wait to get home to pump?

  • Can you bring your pump with you and pump in the car? Or a manual pump? I just remember being very uncomfortable at that point without pumping for a while. My pump had a battery pack and I eventually bought a car adapter so I could pump in the car for things like this or while on the road for work. You can pump on your way to the game and as soon as you get back out to the car.

  • I would bring a manual pump just in case - I was away from my two month old for six hours last week and my boobs were rock hard and dropping steadily by the time I got home, lol.
  • I don't have a manual pump or battery. I guess I might need to look into getting one. Things a FTM doesn't think about. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Something you might be able to use long term is an a/c adapter for the car. Plugs into the lighter and had a normal outlet in the other end so you can plug your pump in. You can eventually use it for other electronics on road trips. Unfortunately I thought about this after I purchased the car adapter for my pump

  • Fwiw, you will be totally fine if you skip one feeding in your entire BFing career... You will not mess up your supply from that. Seriously.
If you make that a rule and start skipping regularly, sure, but not from one time...
You might be uncomfortable some, may need to hand express or something. But I wouldn't worry about dragging a pump to a sporting event. Try to feed/pump right before and after, maybe toss in an extra pumping afterwards. But it hardly seems like the end of the world...
  • I agree about the general car adapter.  I used it with my pump, but we've also used it to charge Nintendos, iPads, cell phones etc. in the car on long car trips.  I think we only paid $15 for it on Amazon.

  • While it may not hurt your supply if you miss 1 pumping, if you feed right before you go and right upon returning, at 2 months, you will likely be very uncomfortable by the 4-5 hour mark and you might leak. If it's possible to bring a battery pack/car adapter/manual pump and plan to pump around half way through if you can.

I'm in the minority, but I didnt go anywhere without by baby for more than 1 hour until I returned to work at 12 weeks, and then I did initially go 4 or 5 hours without pumping due to a bad work environment, but I would get mega uncomfortable.

  • I would be in a lot of pain if I tried to go 6 hours without breastfeeding at 2 months. I have a manual pump for just such occasions.

  • One more thing- because you didn't mention it- if your LO hasn't been introduced to a bottle yet, you will definitely want to do that sooner rather than later because not all EBF babies take to a bottle right away.

  • I was away from DS at 2.5 months for a concert. Roughly 6 hrs. At that point I would still get uncomfortable after 3-4 hrs. I picked up the evenflo manual pump and it worked great. The pump was inexpensive and is way more convenient than carrying around your regular pump. I fed DS right before leaving. Pumped 3 hrs later while tailgating at the concert and then as soon as we got back to the car after the concert.

  • I agree. I have been EBFing for almost seven months now. Earlier into it, if I was gone for 3 hours I would be feeling uncomfortable. One night out our plans got rearranged and I ended up being gone for around 4-5 hours and I was super uncomfortable and I leaked. A manual pump would have been nice I have.

We did a concert at 7 weeks and I was away for longer, I think closer to 7 hours. I was NOT comfortable by the time I got home (and then proceeded to pump a crazy amount) but it did not kill my supply so you should be fine. Don't forget the nursing pads ;) otherwise you'll be starting a wet t-shirt contest lol
