I just got a jury duty summons in the mail. I'm supposed to report December 1st. Please tell me I can get out of it! That's also around when I start final exams I'm due January 8th so I'll be almost 8 months pregnant.
I've gotten jury duty notices a few times, and I've never actually had to go... I would just exaggerate/lie about your opinions on the questionnaire they send you. Tell em you're racist and you can't wait to give someone the death penalty. Lol... That may be the only way to get out of it. As far as what I've heard, they don't care about your life or finances, it's your "duty" to serve if they summon you. BUT, I don't know how true this is, my old boss told me her sister worked for the county, and she knew they don't pursue people who don't send the initial questionnaire back to them. Something about, they don't have delivery confirmations for those, so they wouldn't even be able to say for certain that you received it... I wouldn't risk ignoring it, though.
In my state, pregnancy is an acceptable reason for postponement or excusal. You just need a note from your doctor. Check the summons form or log in to the website (assuming there is one) and I'm sure they have more information.
I was excused in late October. It was no big deal. Seemed like my doctor writes those notes all the time.
Eta: Or I guess I should have said in my county not my state.
See they sent me the form a few months back and I filled it out and mailed it back to them (there was never any indication of when I would actually have to serve so I didn't think anything of it at the time) The thing I got in the mail today was just a letter saying hey be here at this time on this date. There is a phone number to call so it can't hurt to try. I can also ask my doctor if she'll write me a note.
You might want to see if you can get a note or call and see if you can postpone. I will say that I have been asked to report about 5 times but then when I call like the form says I am never actually called. There has only been 1 time in like 15 years that I actually had to report and even then I wasn't chosen, I just had to sit there for about 3 hours while they picked their jury.
I was called 2 years ago, when dd was a few months old. I was still on maternity leave/ summer break so I asked for a postponement and I haven't heard anything since
Yup being a student with finals should be a justifiable excuse, and explain the pregnancy too in case they want to push it to January.
If you're a SAHM, you might be able to get out of it indefinitely after that on hardship - that it would be too detrimentally expensive to find and pay for child care for the time you'd be on a jury.
I always write finals as my excuse not to go. I've been out of school for years. My aunt always wrote that she was breastfeeding. She used that as an excuse for about 8 years.
I was on a jury when I was 7ish months pregnant. It was summer and I teach, so I had already pushed it back. I thought for SURE I would get excused bc who would want a PG woman sitting there, having to take a lot. Breaks to pee and stretch. But nope, I got picked. I cried. It was a 1 day trial and I wrote on my jury card that I had a condition in which I needed frequent breaks, which they allowed. It was really no big deal but not ideal.

Uh, it is your "duty". If you have a legit reason to be excused, you'll be excused. I would hope you wouldn't actually lie or seriously suggest for others to lie; it speaks loud and clear about one's character.

Yep - these are valid excuses in my county as well (I think there were 7 on the list). If you are the primary caregiver for a child under 6, you are excused. I guess I can see why some places wouldn't excuse/postpone based on pregnancy, but I'd be really surprised about the SAHM part.
And I totally side-eye lying to get out of jury duty. That's messed up.
In MA, you can automatically ask to postpone jury duty for any reason for up to one year - that's what I did when I received a summons for December. (Aim for a Friday if possible in August as many lawyers and judges are on vacation at that time).
Whatever you do, please do not listen to anyone who encourages you to lie or exaggerate on your questionnaire. That is illegal and it doesn't always work.
Ask your OB to write you a note, and that will get you out of it. Honestly, they probably don't want you serving on a jury when you're that pregnant because your going into labor would definitely disrupt! I got a summons when I was on bed rest with DS1, and my OB just laughed and wrote the note. Since then, I've been summoned a few times, but never actually called in because I've been nursing babies and I am the primary caregiver for my children during the day.

Obviously, I don't lie to get out of jury duty, otherwise I would have said so. I clearly said I have been picked for jury duty multiple times and just never had to actually go. The "lol..." at the end of my suggestion shows how serious I was about it. Lighten up, forreal. Criticizing someone that was simply contributing to a conversation on an expectant mother forum speaks a lot about one's character, if you ask me. Some people on here are just looking to pick fights...
That happened to me when I was pregnant with DD! Luckily, I didn't end up even having to go. I don't know if it works the same way in every state, but here, you have to call with an assigned number the night before jury duty is set to start. When I called, they gave a range of numbers that had to report, and a range that didn't. Luckily, I was in the group that didn't.
I was going to call to see if I could get out of it, but I read that in some states, you can only get out of it once. So, if I got out of it while I was pregnant, there's a chance I could have been summoned again with a newborn. I figured that they probably wouldn't have selected me anyway, being so visibly pregnant and due relatively soon.

I don't think that was obvious or clear. Adding a "LOL" does not negate everything said prior to it.
I had a jury summons for last Thursday, I went and brought my doctors note with my due date. It was only after they explained the length of the case (it was supposed to last over a month) that I got up and filled out the back of my summons form stating my reason for wanting to be dismissed. The lady didn't even question me, she saw my reason and note and said "okay you're free to go!" I'm due the 9th and to me risking being by myself, away from home wasn't worth the risk.
I wouldn't lie personally... But I think in most cases they will have sympathy for the fact that you're obviously pregnant, most likely have to pee every 30 minutes, require several meal breaks and can't sit comfortably in any chair.
I got jury summons at 6 months, they asked how I was feeling and if I thought I could sit for that period of time. They told me I wasn't far enough along to be excused, but being 8 months pregnant, they might excuse you for how far along you are. The case I was scheduled for was settled out of court and I didn't have to go in the end.
There are tons of legitimate reasons to be excused from jury duty. I've only been summoned once and didn't even receive the paper until after the selection date. I would have gotten out of it anyway because I was still in school (high school actually).
lol don't worry peeps, I'm not going to lie to get out of jury duty. If I tell the truth and still have to go I will suck it up. Thanks for all the good advice ladies.
I was unable to get out of it. I got called in August, and I'm being induced the week of Christmas. Other than the first orientation day, though, I've yet to actually have to go. They keep postponing our trials.
I submitted a request to be excused since I'd be on maternity leave for a large portion of my service. They said nope, I can just call and let them know when my leave starts and then call when I go back to work, and they'll put me back in.
