Winter Clothing and Carseat Safety

It looks as though winter has descended upon much of the country, so I wanted to what A14 is doing in regards to heavier winter clothing and safety in the carseat, especially now that out babies are getting older.

I recently shared a picture on social media of LO wearing a thin fleece zip up in his infant carseat (attached to the BOB). It was brought to my attention by a friend that LO shouldn't be wearing any extra layers while buckled in the carseat due to risk of ejection in a crash. I'm sure she thought we were in the car...

My question is, do you strip LO down to the bare minimum while in the carseat, or would a fleece zip-up or similar thickness layer fly with you safety wise?

Re: Winter Clothing and Carseat Safety

  • I just had my car seat check done as we recently switched to the convertible. We had LO with us and he had a zip up cotton hoodie sweatshirt. She said that was a perfect extra layer to have and no more than that. Blanket over the top of him once strapped in. And he has a winter hat on, still need to buy mittens. Do those actually stay on the babes?

  • I'm OK with a thin layer. I like the advice I heard to strap LO in, undo the straps and take off the jacket, and redo the straps. If they are too slack with the jacket off then LO shouldn't wear it in the car seat.
  • I've been putting LO in a sweater and toque in the car, with a blanket on top. I make sure to warm up the car before we get going. I keep a few extra blankets and throw his snowsuit in the back in case we break down.

I've found his mittens do stay on! But I'm thinking of getting clips just in case since I've already lost a pair.
  • Liam wears a thin, cotton hoodie.

So many people don't know about the heavy/thick layering-DH had no idea and he has an 8yo and a couple kids at Liam's daycare have puffy coats

  • We have a light fleece one piece thing. This is Canada. Blankets just are not gonna cut it. Especially when we switch to convertable. Our car is far from our door.

Same here @Jessimax‌. I'm in Colorado and it's 5 degrees F and snowing like mad right now. I worry about LO's warmth in the car even with the heater on.

Canada too. We're in a convertible at the moment. But I'm just too paranoid to put him in the carseat with anything thicker.
  • I was told that thin fleece was fine so we do that and a blanket and a hat for her little head. Just nothing thick and puffy.

  • We do no thick fluffy stuff, but thin fleece or cotton hoodie/sweater and then blankets over her once buckled. We swathe her once she's buckled to the point that DH calls her Little Ninja because just her eyes are peeking out. XD

Thin fleece jacket and blanket here too. We both have remote start so it should be fine this winter.

We got a fleece one piece from old navy- works great especially now that we use a convertible car seat. They are sized 6-12 month so works well even though she is very long.
  • We have a wool knit sweater, we use for car rides. It's warm enough and thin enough to make sure the straps are tight. We usually double down on leggings and then a toque until the car warms up. Otherwise not much else is needed.
