Tummy time

So I'm sure this has been talked about but please tell me some of your LOS don't like tummy time? DS is almost 16 weeks and hates it! He lifts his head up a little. UT nothing like I see some babies do. The majority of the time is spent locking whatever we are lying on. Somehow H got him to roll over onto his back while doing tummy time but that is definitely not usual for him. I HATE comparing him but of course I get nervous.

My LO is getting better but he hated it with a passion for weeks. All I can say is just keep trying it with different things - like on your belly, on a yoga ball, on your knees, with a mirror, etc etc You might find something that they like. Also I practice rolling my LO back N forth and try to extend the tummy part of the roll a little bit here and there. That sort of sneaks him into it without him noticing as much. GL!

  • I put a rolled up hand towel under his chest and that was really helpful for him. I noticed a marked improvement in how high he could lift his head. I wouldn't say he's a huge fan of TT but he does tolerate it for about 5 min.

  • My LO isn't a huge fan of tummy time but she is starting to tolerate it a little more each time. It'll get better, I'm sure.
  • Someone on here suggested "rolly polly-ing" with them, where you start on the back and rock LO from side to side until the end up on the tummy. That works for us, even though it doesn't last too long. During the day, I will put a blanket and the Boppy in the table and prop him up on that so he can see what I am doing in the kitchen. He loves that. Of course, once he starts rolling we won't be able to do it, but it works for now. Hope you get some advice that helps!

He will tolerate it for 5-10 mins but doesn't ever lift his head very high and usually lays sucking his thumb or licking the boppy or blanket. I do the rolling back and forth side to side which he likes I just can't fir the life of me get him to lift his head very much! When I hold him he does and looks all around so hopefully it's not that big of a deal :/

  • My LO hated it forever. And then this past week she just started being able to hold her head up all the way, she just turned 12 weeks Friday. I think she partly wasn't able to do it because she was getting her legs under her when she would squirm because she was mad. I held them still once and she lifted her head all the way. After that I guess she figured it out.

  • Not being snarky, but try searching for other times tummy time was discussed. I remember there being a lot of good tips, but I can't think of all of them. I also can't link because I'm mobile.

But, my LO loves TT. He especially likes being on the boppy or doing superman. If you do the boppy, give him something to look at... Lay in front of him, put a mirror there, put his favorite toys out there, etc.
  • My LO hated tummy time as well. He's 3 mo and has been holding his head up since 2 mo but when I put him on his tummy he buried his face down into the blanket or tries to lick the blanket beneath him.

LO lasts about 30 seconds on tummy then starts to complain and escalates to a scream. He only likes being on his tummy if he is on me. He loves taking naps on me.

I just got a boppy and will be trying it out for tummy time. Hope it helps!
  • DS hates tummy time too but tolerates it a little more when propped up on the boppy.
  • I might have a tummy convert now that she can grab onto the things in front of her. Her reflux is seeming better too because before she didn't like tummy or flat on back.

  • My LO used to only last 30 seconds or so doing tummy time and she could hardly lift her head. At about 15 weeks she just suddenly got it! She can hold her head way up, push up on her arms, and roll over. It was literally a difference overnight, so I'd say just keep trying.

  • Well it seemed right after I posted this ds has gotten much better at tummy time. Doesn't live it but actually holds his head up and kicks his feet. Guess he'll do it when he feels like!

Brooke hates tummy time too. I fear I'm one day going to have a 13 year old bobble head.
