Breastfeeding

I'm in more pain than I was....

I found BF'ing to be very painful when I started & at 3 1/2 wks in, I truly feel like I am in more pain than I was in the beginning...these poor things need a break!!!!  I was just in tears.....so sad, I didn't want to give in to formula.

  • Do you have a pump? There is no harm in pumping for a feeding or two to give them a break.

  • I agree with PP. I would pump for a day or two to get a break. By 6 weeks, the pain was over for me. It is completely your decision to keep BF or switch to formula....but some relief is probably just around the corner if you stick it out a couple more weeks. GL with your decision.

  • Thanks girls.  I just pumped, but didn't get much...between both I got 2 1/2 oz....that doesn't seem like a lot.....

  • I'm not sure why you think that's not a lot. If your not pumping regularly and your baby is only a few weeks old that's a great amount.
Pumping in addition to nursing won't yield as muh as exclusively pumping.

  • Great amount and in fact that seems like a lot to me! Great job, mama! The pain got better for me around 4 weeks PP. Hang in there, it gets easier, I promise :)

  • Thank you...all very informative.  Ok, so he seems to be taking 3-4 oz at a sitting & I just pumped again & produced less than 2....I feel like I am not producing enough...

  • Since having him, my water intake has plummeted.  How much will water/vitamins help my supply & how quick?

  • At 3.5 weeks your baby's tummy is the size of an egg. They eat so frequently in the beginning because they can't take in a lot at one feed. I personally would be very surprised to see a baby taking 3-4 oz in one feeding at that age. I don't know what my DD was drinking at that age, but I remember closer to 2.5 months the LC said about 3oz....but even then every baby is so different and depends on how frequently they eat and how much they weigh. Your supply seems more than OK to me even if you're pumping less than 2oz. Also, remember that the pump isn't as efficient as the baby so it's not indicative of how much you produce. I'm not sure why you are worried about your supply, it seems great! Your supply will likely increase just a little more in the next few weeks. However, don't worry about it as your baby will tell your body what the perfect amount is for him. Just let your baby nurse on demand and it will work out fine!

  • I was in so much pain in first month and I had a clogged duct on nipple that I couldn't see and it turned into mastitis. I couldn't even touch that Breast. And the LC missed it too. She kept trying to fix latch. Got meds, lifesaver!! Still nursing at 9 months. Hang in there!
