Keeping little legs warm

We're in the Midwest so it's getting cold now. This week is mostly a high of 40 degrees. DD goes to daycare and they play outside every day, but I'm struggling to figure out how to keep her legs warm in this interim between sort-of-cold and really-cold-with-snow. When we're truly in winter I'm sure the kids will all have snow pants or snow suits, but that seems like overkill right now. She has a warm jacket, but her pants are all leggings. Thicker jeans have never fit very well with her round belly and short legs, and her tops tend to be baby-doll style tops that work well with leggings. I cringe at the idea of buying a bunch of new clothes when all of these will still fit for several months. Any ideas for other ways to keep those little legs warm enough when she's playing outside?

Re: Keeping little legs warm

  • It is getting really cold here and the wind today!!! Uhg, I greatly dislike winter!!!

I don't have any good advice for you, I have a boy and he pretty much always wears jeans so he stays pretty warm. Although I did leave a pair of thermals at his daycare so if they do go out and play in the snow she can put those on under his clothes and then put on his snow bibs, coat, hat, gloves.

I have a love/hate relationship with snow. I like it secretly. It reminds me of my father. But I hate driving in it!! Although I cannot wait for the first significant snow so J and I can go out and play in it!! We really didn't get out in it too much last winter.

  • Last year, before DD was walking and hated wearing shoes I would put tights under her leggings to keep her feet warm and avoid the pulling off of socks. So maybe try that? Or, Target and Kohl's carry cheaper fleecey style pants that would be a good option.

  • You cold just put baggy sweatpants over the leggings. That's what I do with tights on Sundays.

  • I've already started putting her in fleeced-lined boots here in Chicago. Between that and her heavy jacket and hat, she stays warm. On colder days, we do flannel-lined jeans or warmer sweatpants.

Let's all pray to baby Jesus that the Midwest doesn't get walloped again with subzero temps this year...

  • @DCKate‌ Here, here! I'm hunting down a little trampoline and one of those folding plastic slides in preparation. The multiple days of not being able to even leave the freaking house would utterly kill me this year!

  • I went to Carters this morning and they have thick fleece leggings on the doorbusters tables for $5.

  • We have 10 inches predicted here in Wisconsin on monday, and I will cry.  I love the snow but the idea of illnesses and being cooped up is freaking me out!  I plan on getting out as much as we can.  I second the tights under pants or fleece lined pants.  I also have done the cheap sweatpants over pants as well.  leg warmers would work though since their butts have diaper insulation :) ... so far I have just wung it but I am sure the point will become moot next week when I have to send her in a snow suit, UGH!!!!
