Recommendations for a new vehicle?

I'm looking to get a new vehicle that will allow someone tall enough leg room to ride in the seat in front of a rear facing car seat or infant seat. I have a 2011 camry right now and it's a squeeze to fit a rear facing seat anywhere but the middle. We will have two carseats in the car (2.5 year old behind driver, infant seat behind passenger) and need room for a big dog. Suggestions? I've been looking at listings for Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevy Equinox and am open to all suggestions. We haven't gone to test drive anything yet.

Re: Recommendations for a new vehicle?

  • My in-laws have the Santa Fe and it's a pretty great car.  My H is also looking into the Buick Enclave and the Ford Escape.

  • We have a Honda pilot, we absolutely love it. When our twins are born, we will have 4 in car seats, we most likely are keeping our pilot, but have looked at the GMC Acadia.

  • I would recommend looking at consumer reports before you purchase a vehicle. That publication has never let me down. It's a great vetting system!

  • We just got an SUV in the spring. If we would have had more money for the vehicle fund, I would have been all about the Santa Fe. We got a Buick Rendezvous and love it. They actually don't make it anymore. They switched to the Enclave.
  • We just purchased a 2013 Kia Sorrento. I absolutely love it! It is perfect for me and isn't too girly for the DH. Its a smooth ride, great on gas and has plenty of room. Seats 7!

  • Glad this was asked; going to look at the Pilot and Enclave today. Black Friday is coming and I am thinking this is a good time to buy... We shall see.
  • Mazda CX-5, or CX-7 or 9 if you want larger. Rated highest in safety in their class and decent gas mileage for an SUV. I adore mine!

  • I drive a Kia Soul, and I love it.  DH is a big guy, and he can ride in front of DD with no issues.  We will be keeping it when LO arrives, and I don't think I'll have any problem with two kiddos in the back. I know that a Soul might look small, but they're really bigger on the inside than they look.

    Happy shopping!

  • I have had two Pilots. One was totaled in an accident my husband and son were in. It looked pretty bad and both of them were completely safe. That's why I got another one. I have had mine for 160,000 miles without a single problem. And lots of space. I am having #4 and we all still fit. And I love that the third row folds flat when you don't need it. And food for thought: if you plan on keeping this vehicle for a long time, once your oldest is in school you may find yourself transporting there friends. We seem to always have someone extra with us, which makes having 8 seats perfect.
  • I love my Nissan Murano - can't recommend it enough
  • We have a Subaru Cross trek and we love it. Great gas mileage and all wheel drive.

We had an absolute NIGHTMARE earlier this year with the Mazda CX5, so that's really the only car I would stress that you not consider. The rear brakes failed on us, on the highway, with only 21k miles on it. Even though we were still under full warranty - had the car just over a year - Mazda refused to cover the brakes even though we had several mechanics verify they were faulty. We discovered a pretty significant coverup on mazdas part, they classify this kind of brake failure as "excessive wear and tear" so they don't have to admit there's a huge problem with their break system. We traded it in because neither of us have time for a court battle, but someone will do it soon I'm sure.

  • We are looking at the buick enclave. I have a lucerne now and love it so we will most likely stick with buick.

  • We just got a Toyota Highlander since we wanted a car that could fit however many kids we decide to have (3-4, probably) and our dog. The third row folds down flat; my tall dad and tall husband sat in the third row to prove that it wouldn't fit adults and found that they fit just fine--though they wouldn't be comfortable for long trips. Kids would go just fine, though.

We know that it won't store enough inside if we were packing for vacation (and had it packed with kids), but we have a roof rack for that. This is our first kid, so we shouldn't even need that for several years.

  • We have a Toyota highlander and Ford Explorer. Both have third row, but I think the explorer is a bit roomier. Love them both!

Honda pilot over here as well.. Safety rating is how I choose it after size. Also have an acura MDX ... Both really nice
  • Love our explorer! It's very roomy but still a little tight for my husband at 6'1" in front of the car seat. For me at 5'4", not a big deal.

Honestly the best features are the keyless entry and the button to close the trunk. So easy when my daughter is screaming and carrying her car seat, diaper bag, my purse, etc., not to have to find my keys. It would be hard to go back from those features.

I had a Lexus IS and just traded it in for a much more roomier Toyota Corolla I was surprised how much more room the new ones have and th trunk is big enough too but... I just have to worry about fitting one car seat maybe two if I take my niece anywhere with me. We decided for the next car the Toyota Venza it's a nice roomy suv
  • We are going to be looking at getting either a Tahoe or Suburban. :)
  • I agree with those that say to check the consumer reports. My personal opinion between your two current selections, the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Chevy Equinox is that I personally would look at the Hyundai more closely.

Now my opinion may be biased but here it goes. My company uses GM vehicles for our fleet vehicles, I drive mine daily and generally get a new vehicle around 100k miles, I'm on my fourth vehicle.

I am generally not impressed by their interior/exterior outfitting and feel that that they tend to miss the mark when it comes to finessing the final product. For example the lines and gapping on all of my GM fleet vehicles between the bumpers to the sheet metal are never as uniform as they should be seeing as how they come straight from the factory brand new. Also on many of the entry to mid level trim packages of their vehicles, they use a particular plastic interior trim on the dash, trim panels, etc that exude just that, the look of plastic. My brand new car also reeked of formaldehyde for a month from the plastic dash. I had to roll around with my windows down for a month instead of enjoying the traditional "new car smell". GM has been trying to emulate designs from other successful brands (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford) and have not been able to achieve the same "look/effect".

My last GM vehicle had "chrome" trim including the interior door handles. Well that "chrome" are just appliqués that peeled off all door handles before the car hit 2 years. In addition to that, every GM vehicle I have driven, had a costly mechanical issue before it hit 30k miles. Keep in mind as a fleet vehicle, I am required to keep impeccable maintenance for the vehicle and still experienced these issues.

My job requires me to look at, estimate and appraise vehicles. I find myself more and more impressed by the design/technological elements from Hyundai and Kia as they are more in line with what you may find in some of the other brands I mentioned (Toyota, Honda, Ford, Nissan). I would recommend that you test drive any vehicles that you are considering, heck I would drive them a couple of times and make your decision based on comfort, affordability and resiliency(based on the consumer reports) GOOD LUCK! Please let us know what you end up getting!
