breastfeeding question

My LO is 3 days old..he latched right away but I've noticed that he will have a bowel movement while I am nursing him and then acts like he is starving very soon after like it's been hours since he ate. I don't recall any of the nurses or lactation consultant providing any info on a situation like this but I'm wondering if the milk is literally going right through him and that's why he seems to never be satifisfied? Anyone ever experience a situation like this and if so, any advice/tips???

Re: breastfeeding question

  • Babies tend to relax while nursing and it's totally normal for them to poop. Mine alwayyyys did. The reason he's never satisfied is because he's still growing and developing sooooo much, he needs the energy to get it done! Totally normal. It's also that breastmilk is extremely easy for them to digest, which means that it does get processed through their system quickly - meaning more poop, and being hungry again fairly quickly. All normal and good.

  • @MuchlyGen‌ Thanks for the input, that all makes sense. Unfortunately, I've been up all night and it's hard to get any sleep at all. Just feeling exhausted already..and it's only the beginning.
  • When a baby starts to suck it stimulates the colon to empty so it's very common whether it's a breast or bottle fed baby to poop during feedings. Just stop, change him, and continue to feed until he is finished. Good Luck! :)
  • Another question somebody might be able to help out on. My lil guy struggled with latching at first (frenulum was clipped 2 days ago) and is getting better & stronger (delivered at 37w3d csect).

He has dropped enough weight that I'm having to supplement formula along with my breast milk. I'm fine with this. Overnights I really struggle, I'm thinking about just pumping but not actually trying to get him to take my breast. Does anybody have any advice or thoughts on this?

And to clarify, I've been pumping after every feeding. Typically we try a breast (max 10-15mins because latching can be such an issue), then Baby gets my pumped milk and then the formula supplement.

  • Thanks ladies @MuchlyGen‌, @ColtiersMom‌ - I must have jinxed myself - in a good way bc I was just able to get a few good hours of rest. It feels so good to just be able to get my head on straight after these past few crazy days! :)
  • We are 3 days old over here as well. They constantly eat in the beginning. The second night he ate from midnight to 7:30 without really stopping. They are just getting use to being on the outside and that breast is very comforting for the transition. My first ate frequently for nearly 10 months without slowing down, it is exhausting but my supply was never an issue because baby was always at the boob.
