Leg cramps!

I've been getting 2-3 painful leg cramps every single night. It's an excruciating pain..

I'm just wondering is there anything I can do to fix this, or prevent this? At this point I don't even care Id just like to reduce the amount.. My legs are always so sore..

Re: Leg cramps!

  • Drink lots of water, stretch calf muscles, eat foods high in magnesium (beans, nuts, seeds, dried fruit), make sure you are also getting enough calcium. Walking it out actually helps, although when you are lying in bed is when they tend to strike.
  • Loading the player...
  • Thank you!! The pain is usually so bad I end up jumping right up and trying to walk it off!
I was suggested to calcium pills by my sister, hopefully it helps! Thanks again:)
  • Shove your thumb into the cramp if you're laying in bed. Sounds painful but it helps it loosen quicker. I used to get such bad cramps in my legs and feet at night when I played sports and what PP said will definitely help too!
  • You could try a banana before bed, potassium can often alleviate cramps.

  • When it happens, flex your toes instead of pointing them. It help help relieve the cramp faster.

  • Bananas can be good for muscle cramping. My SIL had to eat a banana every day of her last pregnancy.
  • At my last appointment my midwife said to not have any dairy a few hours before bed. I've had a few but I usually eat my dairy in the morning/afternoon now so I don't have this problem. She also recommended bananas.
  • I always have to hop out of bed to walk them off. So not fun. I second the pp who said more water and bananas. They always turn up on days when I don't hit my water goal!
  • Leg cramps can be from dehydration. Drink LOTS of water. Mix it up--try some seltzer. It's helped me get my water in everyday. Same with PPs--bananas, walk it off, and stretch. Do you have one of those roller stretcher things? PITA, kinda hurty, totally works.

  • This might sound weird, but in the tennis community people drink pickle juice to prevent cramping. I prefer to just eat them, but it does help. I also eat bananas for the same reason....and drink plenty of water!
  • Best quote from my soccer coach: "We'll get through another game today with the power of the potassium of the bananas!"

They do wonders to get rid of leg cramps haha

  • Glad I'm not alone! Thank you everyone who has posted these tips, I will try them too! Last night was the worst but the water makes sense because I know I didn't drink as much as I usually do yesterday. OP hope you get some relief!

  • I had an awful one this morning, probably because I hardly drank anything yesterday. Staying hydrated helps!!

  • Potassium and sodium (electrolytes) are great for action potential and warding off muscle fatigue. Calcium and magnesium are necessary for contracted muscles to be able to break the bonds (actin and myosin to release). Dried apricots, avocados, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens are higher sources of potassium than bananas. At height of training I suffer from full quad cramps:-(
  • @lovemymuttzillas‌ - I think it does work because the salt helps you retain water. I'm not sure though.
  • Any time I had a bad cramp (with my first) DH would massage it but only after I ate a spoon of mustard. I know it sounds crazy, but it works... He learned it while playing football. Apparently the coaches gave the players who had cramps mustard.

Does the pickle juice thing work because of the salt?
Electrolytes yes! Pickle juice is actually really good for you. It's very comparable to pedialyte or Gatorade. I loveeee pickle juice lol I drink it all the time.
  • Has anyone else seen (or better yet TRIED) the old wives tale of sleeping with a bar of ivory soap by your legs to prevent them at night? Just curious!

My biggest problem with this is that I actually don't like mustard except in a thin layer on a burger so eating a spoon of it is nasty to me, even though it works.
