Keeping Baby Dry Overnight

Anyone else having trouble keeping your baby dry overnight? Owen is waking up sopping wet and nothing I've tried so far seems to help much. It's been happening for awhile but now I think it's waking him up MOTN, then he wakes his sister up, and the whole house is disrupted. We've tried a couple of different overnight diapers and gone a size up for extra coverage. Any other suggestions? We never really dealt with this with DS1. Thanks!

Re: Keeping Baby Dry Overnight

  • Let me know if you hear of anything. We have been having it too. Maybe 1-2 times/week.

  • Which kind of overnights have you tried?  I use cloth during the day, but Huggies Overnight (size 4 for my giant 23 lb baby) at night.  They have never leaked and sometimes it is 12 - 12 1/2 hours between diaper changes.  I went through lots of different options before finding the Huggies Overnight actually worked for us reliably.  Through the trial and error of finding what works, I did figure out that he pretty much doesn't pee at all until sometime between 3 - 5 am.  Then, he goes a lot!  I am sure to change him as soon as he's up for the day, but again we've never had an issue with the Huggies Overnights.

  • We've tried both pampers baby dry and the Huggies overnight. The Huggies are working better but he's still so wet. Last night he even nursed to sleep instead of having a bottle (I'm pretty sure he drinks less that way), and still woke up soaked at 3:30 when he usually sleeps until 7:00. I changed him and nursed him back to sleep. He woke up soaked again at 7:30.

  • @ntdane, is he soaked or has the diaper actually leaked?  Ryland is very wet - I would say soaked - when he wakes up, but no leaking.  I slather on desitin for wetness barrier before bed each night too.

  • We use Pampers Swaddlers and he never leaks overnight. We've gone a little over 12 hours before with no leaks.

  • We use Huggies Overnites, a size bigger. The only time we've had issues with leaking with them is if she wakes up hungry early in the night. We basically learned that if wakes up hungry before 4am we should change her diaper at the same time.

  • I'd just suggest trying a size up from whatever you are using.  Thankfully we haven't had this issue yet, I do remember my older boys wetting through their diapers when they were older but it was easier to just limit fluid intake after a certain point (talking about 18months+) I would not suggest that at all for our age group of babies.  I also on occasion double diapered..

We use Huggies OverNites one size up for DS.  He sleeps from 7:30pm to 7am without any leaks.  I think the key for boys is to get as much diaper material in the front and point the wiener down.  I also reach into the diaper near his butt cheeks and pull the lining out so that it creates a better barrier to avoid leaks (if that makes sense).  Good luck!

Edit: to add the thing about the liner.

  • OP, thanks for bringing this up! We're having the same issue. I'm going to try the Huggies OverNites and see if they work for us.

The diaper is completely saturated and his sleeper and sleep sack are also soaked, sometimes the sheet and mattress pad too. We thankfully haven't had issues with rashes yet but I told DH we need to start using a barrier just to prevent one.

He wears size 2 and the overnight diapers we've used start at 3, so we're up a size from usual. I think tonight we'll try the double diaper. If we have no luck there maybe I'll try going even bigger. His legs are so skinny though, so that may cause leaks in other areas. I'll just have to work my way down the list :).

Thanks for all of your suggestions!

  • The last bottle that Lo gets is at 7:00.  usually its only 6oz.  If I let her drink any more than that - she usually doesn't want anymore- she will leak at night.  She has a solid food meal at 6:30 followed by the bottle.   She STTN most nights now and has not had a feeding at night since she was 3 months old.  she is currently 21 pounds.

  • So what did you try and how did it go?

  • Last night DH did the diapering and bedtime routine with him before I could make suggestions. He woke up earlier than usual (lots of teething fun here) so we changed him before he soaked himself.

Tonight I put on the Huggies overnight a size up (which we've been using) and made sure to pay special attention to getting as much of the diaper up front as possible. I'll probably try double diapering tomorrow if this doesn't help. @farmrsboywife‌ are the inserts you mentioned cloth or disposable? That's another thing I'll probably try.

  • My little guy is in Target's UP&Up diapers (the regular ones, not the overnight...they suck). If you didn't have a lot of luck with this brand before, you might want to try them again. The company just last month redesigned them. not any huge differences, but they work well for us.

My little guy is around 27 inches long and 23 lbs. We use the size 6 for overnight. most nights he can go from about 8:30-5 without leaks, and he eats 6 oz right before I lay him down to sleep. He has been waking up at 5 wanting to be changed (that sucker is FULL!)  so lately if he wakes up anytime between 12 and 4 for me to flip him over or put his paci back in, I'll swap out his diaper the so he sleeps later into the morning. I do it between 12 and 4 because it's super easy to get him back to sleep after the swap (note - I just swap diapers, no using cold wipes or anything unless he's pooped. he gets a good wipedown when he wakes up for the day).

    good luck!

  • @kimberpoo I wish you had warned me about the Up&Up overnights yesterday! I picked some up and tried them last night. They worked ok for us - they seem more absorbent than the regular ones but it didn't affect his waking up in the MOTN, which is what I'm trying to resolve.

  • If you're not opposed to cloth, I use tots bots bamboozles with a blueberry coverall and it works so well! I've never had a leak.

  • kaking78   I'm glad they are working better for you than they did me. I hope you find a MOTN solution! :)

  • I joked I'm going to turn her diapers around because she sleeps on her stomach so she leaks out the front
  • Do it @WisconsinCheese12‌! I totally stuff overnight cloth diaper with the extra absorbent part in the front since she's a tummy sleeper and leaks if I put more absorbency in the back.
