Cytotec?

So tonight's the night. I'm going in this evening to get cytotec throughout the night because my cervix still hasn't dilated and fully softened. It's a vaginal suppository to help soften the cervix given every 4 hours. Has anybody had any experience with this drug? I hope it helps move things along. I'm 40w6d btw.

Re: Cytotec?

  • No induction experience, but I've heard horror stories about cytotec. I personally wouldn't be comfortable getting it. Why are they not using cervidil?

  • I've looked up the drug, it's side effects and risks. I'm just wanting to know other people's personal experiences. I'm medically trained so I know there's risks and dangers with any drug. I just don't work in the OB field so I haven't been able to witness or gauge any patient experiences. My doctor is suggesting this drug because I am 40w6d and my cervix is still pretty "normal" and closed.
  • I've also read research, peer review, and medical articles that do support it and have found that it's much safer than pitocin, which is why I was just wondering about personal experiences people have had with it.
  • Also, the route it is taken can reduce one's risk for hyperstimulation.

Some are more comfortable with the lower dosage of 25 mcg every 2-4 hours (it can vary) instead of the usual 50. I would prefer PE2 to help with cervical ripening or even foley, and a low dose pit drip with intact membranes.

Cytotec can be some scary stuff.

  • So I took cytotec this time last year orally to complete a MMC - it worked the first time and it wasn't that horrible.  I was induced on 11/1 this time around - my doctor went the cytotec route.  It's a much smaller dose of course, inserted vaginally - had one dose at 10:30 am.  I was only 2 cm (had two previous membrane sweeps).  My doctor said she'd check in 4 hours to see if I need another dose.  About 3.5 hours later, still not much of anything, they inserted a cath for mechanical dilation - so around 2:00 pm (hurt like a biotch).  Probably a half hour after that I started having very strong contractions so I didn't need another dose - I took my epidural (the first one - the anesthesiologist was having an "off" day per the nurses) at about 3:45 or so when they started to get stronger. By about 4:30 I wasn't feeling them, but my doc said they were coming about every two minutes.  The cath fell out at about 6:30 pm or so - so that's 4 or 5 cm?  Like I said, she didn't give me another dose and couldn't give me Pitocin because of the strength of the contractions.

In any case, I delivered 12:59 am on November 2nd - only 5 minutes of pushing (because the 2nd epidural failed and it was push or die in my head).  That was 14.5 or so hours total.  My experience was fine, actually shorter labor than with DS2 - only 1 cm after about 2 days of contractions at home and Pitocin after admission with him.  Now - had I wanted to go med-free - I don't think I could have done the cytotec.  The contractions once my epidurals wore off were terrible and I started shaking and vomiting right before it was time to push from the pain.  I imagine if I had an anesthesiologist that didn't have her head up her ass, it would have been a perfect delivery for me. Baby had no fetal distress/tachycardia, my son was in distress when I had Pitocin.

Good luck!  Everyone has a different experience with inductions and the method, but it did go well for me with Cytotec - only needed the one dose (plus I had the catheter which I'm sure helped).

  • This is my doctor's approach as well. I've heard great things about cytotec, and I've known women who's have very fast labor with it. It is not as hard on your system as Pitocin or other drugs like that, which will end up being what they give you in the morning if you haven't made any progress. Trust your doctor's approach and judgement, I'm guessing he's been doing this for a while :) And don't listen to the horror stories.

What does "medically trained" mean? Are you a doctor? Vet tech? Took a CPR course one time?
I am a Cardiothroacic Surgery Intensive Care Nurse of 5 years in a level 1 trauma center and am currently in graduate school on my way to becoming an acute care nurse practitioner...so I do know a little something about medical research and drugs, I'm just not that familiar with the OB field. Thank you those who shared their experiences.
  • No experience with it personally ... But I'm being induced tonight too, with cervadil though. OB didn't offer a choice or anything between cytotec and cervadil. I'm nervous too, fwiw. Hang in there, we both get to meet little ones tomorrow :)

  • Personally I wouldn't do cytotec because my cousin had a uterine rupture from it years ago. That's all I can think of everytime I hear the word. She almost died and so did her baby. He made it out alive but with many disabilities. Very sad.

They got a huge settlement which they have used to build a park for disabled kids. So some good did come out of their awful situation.

The drug may have been improved since then, it just makes me very nervous.

Went to my high-risk doc today and he suggested I might need to be induced. Having read this thread earlier, I asked about cytotec. His response was that it's fine as long as you haven't had a prior c-section or otherwise have uterine scarring. He was surprised that I seemed so against it. Just thought I'd add his opinion.

  • I've been on this medication this week orally. They are inducing due to my history. Honestly it hasn't done a thing for me and I'm still barely dilated but I know that it can be different for everyone. We decided to take a couple days off to see if anything happens on it's own. My baby and I were monitored the entire time and he has reacted great to it. I hope it is more effective for you.
  • I was induced using cytotec (orally) with my first. I had some horrible hyperstimulation. My contractions were way too close together and way too powerful. I was given all 3 doses and still was started on pit the next am. I had a horrible doc that made some very bad choices though, and ended up with a c-section 24 hours later.

Anyway....cytotec was a horrible experience for me! If I would have known then what I know now about it (even without my bad experience with it) I would have never allowed it to be used on me. I'm not for things being used that aren't FDA approved for that specific use. The majority of women that I know personally who have been induced with cytotec had a bad experience.

Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones. Regardless, good luck with your induction !!

  • i was induced last friday starting with cytotec. i had half of a small pill orally. it moved me from a 0 to a 1 and thinned me out some, but not a huge effect. then i had another dose, even less, but vaginally. it really kicked up my contractions, thinned me out a lot, and caused (well i'm assuming the two are linked) my water to break.

once my water broke i ended up with an epidural and pitocin was what ultimately got me to a 10 quick. 20 minutes of pushing and i got a baby!

so overall i would say my experience was great.

  • I had two or three doses orally, I think, during my induction with my first.  I was less than 1 cm and maybe 20% effaced when I started.  It didn't do much, got me to 1.5 cm and maybe 40-60% effaced, and they started pitocin the next morning.  I had A vaginally 35 hours after I arrived at the hospital to start the induction, but I don't know that an alternative to the cytotec would have given any different results.  I didn't have any issues resulting from the use of that drug as a starter.  I go in Sunday to be induced if I don't have this baby before that, and they will again start with Cytotec.  Given that I was already 4 cm and 80% effaced last Friday  and she stripped my membranes then too (WHY THE FUCK HAVEN'T I HAD THIS BABY YET??) my OB expect the cytotec alone will get labor started and remind my body how it works.  But I'll believe that when it happens since nothing else has gotten this show on the road yet.

  • My water broke (very  very slow) and when I got to L&D it was about 22 hrs since it started. I was fully closed. They did not want to use anything internal due to risk of infection, I started PO cytotec, 20mg every 2 hrs, I had cramping after the first dose and settled into semi-regular contractions, 80% effaced and 2.5 cm dilated after 6 hrs. Occasional fetal decels, It was held due to my painful contractions and the decels, I had an epidural placed and dilated to 10cm  on my own over the next 4 hrs and delivered after 6 pushes. Never started pitocin. Overall, I found my experience to be quite good, but I also was not willing to wait around with ruptured membranes.

  • So I was induced Monday with two doses of cytotec. I never knew it had all the issues until opening this thread. I will say I had a positive expierence. The first round gave me some minor cramping, the second round about 5 hours later kicked me into full blown labor and my body took over. I had no adverse side effects from it. Also I was 41 weeks when induced and was 1 cm and 50 effaced. Good luck op!
Same here,I was induced last Thursday with it.  I only had one round of it and it threw me into full blown labor after about 6 hours.  I didn't have any bad effects from it either and neither has my daughter.

I was induced with Cytotec on the 4th and overall would say it was a good experience. I had 1/2 pill inserted vaginally at 5pm, and quickly had contractions 2 min apart with no progress on my cervix. The plan was another dose at 9 but I ended up having the 2 minute contractions on my own until about 2am when they slowed down and I was given another 1/2 pill. My cervix finally started to make some progress and began to thin out a bit so the pitocin was started at 7am. At 11am my body had taken over and I was in labor on my own so it was turned down. By 7:30pm I was pushing and by 8:30 I had my beautiful girl in my arms. They did have me sign a waiver stating that I understood that Cytotec was not approved by the fda which made me nervous but I forced myself to not Google and trust my doctor. All worked out in the end!
