Milk supply question

Ok I don't know if this has been asked before but I'm a little worried so wanted to ask. When your milk supply stabilizes does it feel like you aren't producing enough? I'm pretty sure my supply just tanked but was hoping I was wrong. Went from being engorged a lot especially when I wake up to barely feeling anything. I feel LO isn't getting enough either as she still seems hungry after feeding.

Add: and when I pump I can't get much but I do pump after feeding. I'm not sure why this happened either.

  • Get this book, it will help so much with your questions!  Breastfeeding Made Simple Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers.  (See my post about the book above.)

To answer your questions, yes it's perfectly normal for your breasts not to feel "full" when you are at full production.

If you pump after feeding you should wait about 30 minutes and then expect to only get about 1/2 a feeding, probably 1-2 oz at most.

If you are pumping instead of feeding, then you should get a full feeding amount 3-4 oz., that being said I can only get 2 oz at most even if it's instead of a feeding.

  • She's 5 1/2 weeks. Glad to hear that not feeling it doesn't mean I'm not producing enough. We've had a lot of issues from clogged ducts to yeast so if not feeling it is normal that's a good thing.

Like PP said, absolutely normal. If LO is still hungry after a feeding, put her back to the breast. If she becomes fussy at that breast, switch sides. She might be growing!
