Tips on avoiding fast food?

I was really good for eating healthy up until 18 weeks. I've been craving mcdonalds, A&W, you name it..
I work in the mall and I smell it all the time, even when I pack a healthy lunch I go straight for the food court.

I need help :( my will power isn't enough anymore. Any tips on avoiding it?

  • Maybe order something healthy from it? Salad, grilled chicken wrap, etc. But otherwise I want fries now.

Try to limit it to only once or twice a week and don't stress over it.
Agreed.  I look forward to "Taco Bell Thursday" every week because it's the one day that I go out and get fast food.  DD has ballet class and she and I go there afterwards for dinner every week.  I'll be sad when she requests a new place.  I love Taco Bell!

  • I am horrible at this too. I work at a bank...on the right is Blimpie, on the left is McDonald's, across the street is Little Caesars and Subway. Just about 5 minutes across town is every other fast food place. The healthy angel on my shoulder says to choose Subway but the little devil on the other shoulder tells me that is is way easier to go through the drive-thru next door (especially when it is snowing and freezing out).
  • I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it! I wasn't very good about eating healthy the beginning of this pregnancy, but I tried not to beat myself up for eating something I normally wouldn't just because it sounded awesome. Every once in a while isn't a big deal, just don't eat junk food/fast food every day and you'll be okay. Or like @snegde said, just splurge on a little thing like fries and eat healthy otherwise.
  • I feel your pain..I wish they would demolish the lil ceasers near my house..
  • Give yourself rules: you will only get a kid's meal on X day of the week.

I eat it. I just order healthier options. Chili from Wendy's, grilled chicken sandwiches from wherever, yogurt parfaits , Egg white breakfast sandwiches... I do indulge on In and Out. It's just so good and won't hurt my baby.

Oh how I wish there was an In and Out Burger place where I live.

  • I agree with getting a healthier option and maybe a smaller treat. First tri I was addicted to McD's .... Haven't had it in over a decade (just not a fast food lover). The grilled chicken wraps are pretty good! And HUGE. So I would get that with a small (sometimes large) fry. Hit the spot every time.
  • Oh my gosh all I could eat for half of the first tri was McDonalds... And I am still craving it to the point where pretty much anything else makes my want to just vomit.... If it keeps up I am going to gain like 300lbs and blow through my life savings on burgers and fries and chocolate shakes.
  • I'd say either 1) exercise moderation - give in to temptation sometimes, but not too often, and 2) research all the disgusting stuff in fast food and maybe you'll be so disgusted that you won't want it ever ever again ;)

The issue could be that you're physically habituated to eating it.  Most fast food is full of additives and freakishly high levels of sodium and sugar (yes, sugar, even in the burgers/sandwiches). When your body is accustomed to having this type of food regularly (most days), you will crave it and feel better once you've eaten it, although the feeling is probably short-lived. With this in mind, try to avoid it completely for a week or so and see if the cravings improve. I often catch myself doing this with sweet things after dinner... if I start having dessert regularly, I start to feel like I just NEED something sweet every night. Once I hold off for a few days, I really don't miss it.  Good luck and congrats on trying to moderate your intake.
  • Now I want McDonald's.
  • Thanks guys ☺️
  • Can't wait! After tennis this morning I'll be getting an egg McMuffin! My recommendation is exercise first then reward yourself.
  • I agree with @kbehelr‌ - let yourself have a naughty treat once in a while when you've exercised a bit more than normal and have "earned" the calories. (Half the time you won't want the unhealthy food at that point anyway, because you won't want to ruin how good you feel!)

  • I also agree with letting yourself have it every once and a while. I'm the kind of person who if I deny myself something I will go crazy and over do it! What if you planned once or twice a week where you could do half and half? Like one day you order a chicken sandwich but skip the fries and bring a salad or apple slices with you? Or another day bring a veggie wrap and go buy fries to go with it? Then you are getting healthy food but still satisfying the craving!
