Adjusting to two heartbeats

So my DH and I have been TTC for over two years with a M/C in Feb 2012. Long story short but we eventually had to do IVF after two failed IUI's. We were scheduled for a 6w5d U/S on Monday but today I had bleeding and pain so they had us come in immediately. The doctor got a bad look on her face and eventually revealed that one of the two embryos took and split. They had told us we could try only one embryo transfer because of their great quality and they thought we may have twins but didn't think that we would have one that split.

Honestly, I have been in shock ever since we heard both heartbeats. We had discussed a possibility of twins but in my mind, it would never happen since we have no history of that in our families. Now my DH is worried I'm not excited enough. We were already be very careful with excitement until the U/S and said we would get really excited once we heard a heartbeat but knowing now that there are two in there has thrown me for a loop. I don't know how to pull myself out of this haze to get as excited as our parents and my DH.
(This post was copied from an earlier one I posted in a different forum but it was suggested I take it to this forum which I didn't even know existed.)

Re: Adjusting to two heartbeats

  • I'm confused. You transferred two embryos but are shocked you got twins?

  • Thank you all. We transferred 2 but each only had a 50/50 shot of implantation, we were hoping for one to take and stick. It's just a surreal moment seeing two blurps side by side.

  • Ditto the above on all counts. IVF, wondering how you know one split vs both taking...

And the haze will come and go. You'll get used to there being two, then you'll start to feel them move around and you'll be all "holy blessed $h!p, there are two freaking people in there..." again.

  • We always knew multiples were a possibility and honestly after all we had been through and knowing that treatments again in the future would be impossible we secretly hoped for two. That said, it was still a shock to see two heartbeats and the entire pregnancy was surreal. I was surprised how easily everyone else was excited when I was terrified. Take it one day at a time. Educate yourself on the risks of a multiples pregnancy and find yourself a high risk doctor to monitor. Congratulations on your double blessing after a difficult road. These babies will bring you so much joy that the shock will be a distant memory before you know it. Congratulations and welcome!

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who was thrown off with the news.
We had an U/S this morning and we saw two little blips with flashing heartbeats and they were inside the same sac. Unfortunately it was too early to see if there was a membrane in between the two but they are certain one split.

  • We also transferred 2 embryos and I was shocked both stuck since the 14 embryos we transferred previously didn't make it. I think one splitting is definitely more surprising than just 2 separate embryos sticking. You are probably just scared right now and the excitement will come later, although a twin pregnancy is always scary.. Especially if you've done IF treatments bc you're always waiting for the proverbial "other shoe" to drop.

  • So it seems it's not very common for them to split, thanks ladies! Honestly, I was in such shock that I could not make any coherent sentences and just sat there. We have a followup U/S tomorrow and I am currently trying to figure out what questions to ask- I feel like IVF pregnancy may have different questions, especially with multiples.

  • I was shocked, sad, excited, sad, happy, etc. I still have moments where I panic thinking about it. The financial aspect is daunting, as we already struggle on my fiance's wages alone without any kids. Just allow yourself to feel how you feel. If I get too emotional/upset I look at cute twin baby pictures and think about the beautiful bond they will share, and that helps.
