How is your baby doing with solids?

My little guy will be seven months old in five days. We started him on solids jut a few days after turning six months old. Week one: rice cereal. Week two: applesauce. Week three: peas, which we have continued with, as they are the one he hasn't reacted to with a disgusted face. He still isn't really eating what we are giving him. He is excited to get the spoon and shoves it into his mouth, but pretty much all the food gets spit back out. What has your experience been so far?

Re: How is your baby doing with solids?

  • We are just over 7 months. DD has been eating since about 5.5 months, and by eating I mean we have been giving her solids. She eats nothing, except cheerios.

  • Great! We do fruit and veggie purées twice a day and toast, apple slices, carrots for teething here and there.
  • I offer new things weekly but so far not super interested in anything. Most of the time we're lucky to get 2 or 3 spoonfuls. She'll be 8 months in a couple of weeks.
  • We started Dd on cereal 2 weeks shy of 6 months (she will be 7 months next week) and then have offered her applesauce, pureed : pear, sweet potatoes, zucchini, acorn squash, green beans, banana and peach. She will eat maybe 1/4 times and the test of the time she will freak out if we try to feed her until I hand her the spoon which she will then eat from once but will not give it back.
I give her a piece of banana to gnaw on in the mornings and she loves that. I've done the same with apple and pear.
I think it's important to respect their rhythm especially since your baby is getting everything he needs from milk for the first year.
  • DD2 wants to eat all the foods
  • Our guy turns his head at anything puréed! Loves any matchstick food he can hold. We have tried a ton - fish, egg, chicken, turkey, lentils (loves lentil soup, the one puréed item he will eat!), apples, pears, banana, avocado, peppers, tomato, cukes, sweet potatoes, yam, squash... The list goes on. We intro a new food every 3 days and just keep rotating those he had tried. Very grateful for no adverse reactions as he does have cmpa and a soy intolerance. Here's hoping he's growing out of it!!
  • My LO has been doing great. We decided to give her solids because her reflux was bad and thought it might help. It definitely has and she loved everything we have her except green beans.
  • We are doing purées and she seems to love them! She doesn't always finish. Her favorites seem to be apples, pears, prunes and sweet potatoes. She's not a huge fan of avacado.
  • DD2 loves food. We don't do purees at all, but so far she has had just about everything we have. Her favorites are spaghetti and green beans.

  • My guy will eat anything. He lunges towards the spoon all excitedly. We have given him finger foods as well and he goes to town. Hasn't disliked anything yet.
  • DD is doing pretty well. A lot still comes out of her mouth but i kind of just scoop it back in and eventually it all gets eaten. She pushes chunks that are too big out with her tongue. She hates peas though. Gags when i put them in her mouth and then vomits. So yeah, i made a whole big batch of pureed peas that will probably go to waste.

  • Caroline will eat just about anything! We give her mostly chunky purées and then she gets bits of whatever we're eating.
For those who aren't giving finger foods yet and are tired of making purées, check out the munchkin food grinder! We just grind up whatever we're having for dinner. It's awesome!
  • We started giving solids in early October so about a month and a half. She's only really started eating things in the last week. Before that she just mashed things with her hands and spit everything out with a look of disgusted on her face. Now she's totally down with trying whatever I hand her. This has lead to a lot more poopy diapers. She use to go once a day, now it's like 4-5 times :((
  • We started cereal at 5 months and he did well with it. By 5.5 months we added in puréed fruits/veggies. Now he eats like a champ with the purées and cereal, but he's also really interested in what I'm eating so he's had toast, baguette, avocado, banana, pear. I need to keep going with the finger foods because he loves feeding himself.
  • DD hates everything home made we started solids a month ago with sweet potato, peas , squash, potato and then I mix them we try zucchini she love it the first time ,she gag the second time so yesterday I had to buy a "organic" purees and she love the garden vegetables!
  • We started a little before 6 mos. He has no teeth but he loves to eat! He gets yogurt mixed with fruit every day, then usually a fruit/veg purée and a little of whatever we're eating for dinner. Aside from raw fruits and veg (cukes, bananas, beans, etc), he's tried pasta, rice, toast, Italian bread, pizza crust, and Mac and cheese. I also roast carrots and squash sticks for him to chew on, as well as Apple slices cooked in Apple juice and cinnamon.

  • How is everyone doing meat? I want to try meat next and just curious. I have the beaba, so maybe some cooked chicken breast with water and puréed?
  • We just shred soft cooked chicken and he's able to mash it with his gums and eat it. He has no teeth.

  • @CatherineDC2012‌ I tried puréeing chicken and it just became a chalky mess. I agree that it's prob better to just shred it. Or finely chop? I don't know, but it was gross.
  • My pedi said to wait until 9 months for meat? LO is a week shy of 7 months.

We have offered avacado sticks, banana sticks, plain puréed pumpkin, baguette, and a spaghetti noodle.

LO wants everything we're eating but then seems really confused if we give it to her. She will chew a little on the banana. Mostly just plays or licks things. Not really interested in eating yet.
  • Thanks @emilyann64 that does sound sick! We will try chopping.  ;-)
