How are you keeping LO warm?

Since its 25 degrees outside here, how is everyone keeping LO both at night and in the car/outside?

For bedtime, right now I am double swaddling DS in an A&A receiving blanket with a swaddle me over that and a cotton sleeper underneath, but I worry that he gets too cold at night doing this. Our thermostat is set at 67, which is much higher than the 60 degrees that we kept the house at night pre-kids. I miss the lower temp because it was perfect for snuggling under all the covers with DH!

For car rides I just bought a cozy cover off Amazon and a fleece snowsuit from Old Navy, although I'm not sure if I'll use the snowsuit in the car for safety reasons. I guess I wait an see how bulky the snowsuit is when delivered and reassess then.

  • Is the baby waking up from being cold? We just kicked the heat up because she kept wanting to snuggle all night and figured out she was getting

Not sure if he is waking from being cold or not. We've been having a lot of wake ups for the past few weeks in general (before the cold) so it's hard to say. I just wonder about him being cold since he is basically just wrapped in some cotton sheets, while I'm under a big comforter.
  • He wears a long sleeve cotton sleeper under a zipadee zip. I live in MI, but the house is kept at 70. In the car seat he wears a regular outfit and I use a shower cap style fleece lined car seat cover. He seems pretty toasty.

  • We keep the heat at 73 at night and I put DS in 2 layers, a long sleeved onesie and a thick outer footed pajama thingy. I also make sure to wrap a warm blanket on top of this. Our house is drafty as FUCK so I make sure to layer him as much as possible. For outside/car I pretty much do the same but need more ideas! I think I need a car seat cover.

  • We are currently at -11 degrees but it isn't even as cold as it will get yet. Right now, we have a heater turned on and she's in a diaper and her zipadee zip. For going out of the house I do long sleeve onesies with pants, socks, hat, blanket, and a JJ Cole car seat cover. She stays perfectly warm in that.

  • New York area, and we keep the thermostat at 68. We co sleep so LO is always warm overnight. During the day I dress him in fleece onesies or several layers and a wool sweater. He seems to be fine.
  • In ny as well I don't know the temp, but for the past two nights her hands have been cold even though the heat is on 70. She usually wears a long sleeve jumpsuit to bed or leggings and a long sleeved shirt during the day but she is a hot baby so I try not to overdress. Outside she has and old navy fleece plus we through a blanket on her but I think you're supposed to take the fleece off on the car but it's such a hassle and she gets so fussy I just leave it on and modify the restraints.
  • @addysmom22‌ in KY here - too cold for mid November!

  • I'm in ND. We keep our house at 73 all the time. For night, she wears footed pjs. Depending on the thickness of the pjs, she either has a cotton sleep sack or a fleece sleep sack. She sleeps in our room and lately our room has been 75 overnight. So I don't think she is too cold. ;) I have a lined car seat cover that goes over the car seat. When it gets really cold (below zero), I'll put a blanket around her under the cover but after she is strapped in.

  • At night she is in regular footie PJ and a cotton swaddle. When she starts sleeping unswaddled and alone I will likely put her in fleece footies and a cotton sleep sack. My apartment stays at 68-70.

I have a car seat cover that wraps around the car seat. And the a canopy that goes over it. When its real cold I'll put a blanket on her lap too.

    28 degress this morning :/
  • This thread is wonderful, now I have a few ideas for how to keep DD warmer at night.

We just do the long sleeve and footed fleece Pjs. We currently have our thermostat set at 70 (getting down to -10 at night here), but for some reason DDs room stays much cooler. Our room is across from hers and it definitely stays cooler than the rest of the house too, but while we don't mind it, it's much too cold for LO. This week we've had her in bed with us after her MOTN feeding because I just think she's too cold :(

  • Long sleeved footed PJs and a swaddle or sleep sack. During the day I dress her in long sleeves and pants and maybe a little hat or headband that covers her ears. If she is dressed too bulky her seatbelt harness doesn't fit snug so I just add a thick blanket and car seat cover. Our vehicles are garaged and daycare is 2 miles away at my sisters so she isn't in a cold car that long. We keep our house at 68-70 and she always seems content. It's 20-30 degrees here where I live.
  • Whenever I read a post title with a question my first thought is always a sort of snarky one word answer. Then I usually think about it more, overanalyze, and then write out a long response. Anyone else do this?

My favorite ones are titles like: Am I crazy? I always want to go in there and just write "Yes" without even reading it.

Anyways my thought on this one was: clothes.

  • It's in the 20s here. We keep the house around 68 but our room is always cooler. Before bed we turn on a space heater in our room (turn it off before bed though) If he's going into a cotton swaddle me he wears cotton footed pjs. If he's going in a fleece halo swaddle sack its a short sleeved onesie. I'm afraid of him being too hot with the sids risk. Remember babies circulation is still developing so feeling their trunks vs hands is a better indicator if they are warm/cold- his hands are always freezing!

I also have a jj cole car seat cover that's lined and goes over the seat not under- he seems warm and I have taken him out in cold/windy weather.
  • I think my LO gets cold more easily, so he has a lot of layers... usually a fleece or cotton sleeper, depending on how cold it is that day, plus or minus a short sleeved onesie underneath.  Then he's swaddled in a fleece halo sleep sack.  He doesn't seem overly sweaty so I think it works for him, although that may be too much for others.  Our house is at 68 but if it's a cold day outside, it does get colder in parts of the house than the thermostat says...

For the car, ideally the thickest layer they would be in would be a thin fleece, because anything thicker would likely interfere with the tightness of the straps and be a safety hazard in an accident.  You can either use a shower cap style car seat cover (nothing that goes between the baby and the car seat straps) or just use blankets as needed once LO is buckled in.  Here's a good source with more info: https://csftl.org/hello-winter-good-bye-coats/

  • LO is never cold. We went to the park the other day and it was high 40's. I carried him in a thick blanket. He had long sleeved and legged romper on. He was sweating.

Nights= onesie and thicker blanket swaddle or footie pjs (cotton) with muslin swaddle. He stays asleep so we know he is not too cold. (after a bath he's not happy being wet and cold and lets us know!)

I think Fleece would be way too much for him. We live in Texas. It's chilly but not single digits or negatives.
  • We put LO in a long sleeved onesie with just a cotton swaddle me. I tuck a folded A&A blanket around his lower half. The house is between 67-69 at night. He doesn't seem to be getting cold but we might switch to cotton footed pjs under the swaddle once the cold weather is here to stay.

When we go out I layer up LO usually in a long sleeve and fleece hoodie and fleece pants. Then a thick A&A blanket tucked around him.

  • I live in canada and it's snowy and cold here already, so take mine with a grain of salt...

At night: short sleeved onesie under long sleeved footie pajamas, Swaddled in A&A blanket with a swaddle me over top

To the car: her clothes, plus a thin sweater/jacket (carseat safe), mitts, hat, A&A blanket, warm blanket, car seat canopy. I take the extra blanket off once in the car if it's already warm. I also have a car seat safe snowsuit (doesn't affect strap tightness, I tested it, but super warm) and a carseat cover (shower cap style) for when it gets even colder
  • Here is KY too! My LO is hot natured. We keep our thermostat on 65 and just dress her in a footed sleeper. I cover her with a blanket but she always kicks it off! When I take her out I dress her in long sleeves and pants with a thick blanket. I need to put cover on car seat. She has a snowsuit and jackets but she cries so hard if she gets too warm.
