Volume of BM vs Formula+

My other kids drank at least 3-4 oz of formula at a feeding, but there is no way I'm putting that out in BM.  One of my kids was even eating 5-6 oz of formula at this age....big eater!!  It just doesn't seem like it's going to be enough.

  • Thank you for the info....yes, he seems super frustrated today..like he's not getting enough...I pumped one side to make a bottle so I could go to my daughters parent/teacher conf. tonight...I fed on one side & then pumped on the other & only got 1 oz after he fed from that side 3 hours prior...doesn't sound like a lot!  I'm wondering if he's just hungry.......thinking he's frustrated that he's not getting enough.

  • I completely understand how you feel. I ended up FF my first and i remember having to continuously buy bigger bottles and faster flow nipples for them. I did my research this time and got just 5 oz bottles and slow flow nipples. My husband thought I should just got straight to the big ones this time because we "learned our lesson" with the first and could do that to save money. Well... nope! Like PP said, BF babies don't usually drink more than 5 oz bottles and many never get that high.

I remember constantly thinking my supply was dipping or that something was wrong with me at first  when he would go through growth spurts... chances are you're doing just fine!

  • The max bottles my LOs have ever taken were 5 oz. Like PP said, your body knows how long you've been BF and automatically ups the amount of calories in each serving. The volume doesn't change, but the consistency does to meet LOs needs.

  • Newbie chiming in & thanks PP for the info. I was wondering when to get bigger bottles, and now I know they won't be needed.
  • Just chiming in! My DD never took more than 4oz at a time, even at her peak - and sometimes only 3oz, despite growing like a weed. Just make sure to feed him on demand the way you would BFing, and use paced bottle feeding.
