Pregnant after IF

Reduced fetal activity late in pregnancy

So I have many of you experienced reduced fetal activity later in pregnancy?  That's what happened at my drs today when comparing this latest non stress test to my previous one.  They did an ultrasound and made sure she's okay, but it was pretty alarming to me.  Dr. Google says this can be normal, but would feel reassured if any other ladies have experienced this.

OB said if I go more than an hour without feeling anything, to drink cold OJ, lay on my side and count her kicks.  If I don't feel at least 4 an hour, go to the hospital.

Ugh- and here I thought being full term would mean that I'd be in the home stretch.

Thanks as always ladies for being a safe place where I can seek sage advice.  XOXO

Re: Reduced fetal activity late in pregnancy

  • It can be normal, but you need to stay off the internet for this one. This can be a HUGE deal. I'm 36 weeks and know what's "normal" for me...but it could be different for you. You need to know what is normal for you, and when you feel less movement, do the cold OJ/water test, and then call your doctor.

I could give you some reassurance, I have days that are slower than others, especially as baby gets bigger. But there is no harm in calling your doctor...that's what they get paid for!

I've been told after 36 weeks, decreased movement is common since the baby is bigger and starts to have limited room, but bottom line is that you NEED to trust your gut on this one. Babies will have lazy days once in awhile, just like us, but if something doesn't feel "right", and/or you don't feel movement for more than an hour like your doctor said, after laying on your side, head to L&D. It's better to get monitored and sent home so you have the peace of mind. Like the pp said, you know your baby better than anyone at this point, so trust your instincts.

  • Wow, I am surprised by that number. I was always told 6 movements in 2 hours. But different places have different regulations. Also, try massaging firmly. Was just told that last night at prenatal class. As well as a sugary cold drink.

Yes it's normal, yes it's freaky. Hugs.

  • It can be normal, but if it happens, follow the dr's instructions. Like PPs said, baby has less room to move, sleeping, etc. I had that happen with DS around 39 weeks. I drank something cold, ate something sweet, laid and my left side and counted movements. I was TD 8-10 in an hour. It was a lot less than that. They had me come into L&D to check things out. Apparently, I was having some pretty strong contractions that I wasn't even feeling, but no dialation or anything.

  • Our surrogate had this with our LO. It turns out that he had dropped and was restricted in space bc of that. Also, it was tougher for her to feel his movements after he dropped.
Big hugs! I had a ton of anxiety right at the end.

  • I can agree that the anxiety at the end is ALOT higher than any other time! My movement has decreased significantly, she used to be a wiggle worm and now she barely moves. I have often broke down and used the Doppler just to check. My doc told me it is very normal so I'm trying to to worry.. And as PP said STAY OFF GOOGLE!!

    Hugs and t&ps your way!

  • Thank you @ashris13, xc1148 for all of your support on this- I really needed it last week because I was so freaked out!

I went back to the dr today for a follow up NST and baby was super active.  Dr said it was an anomaly and not to worry.  As long as I continue to feel activity I'm okay.  NST also showed I'm having contractions, and I had my cervix checked, 1 cm dilated.  YAY!  I know it could still take a while, but excited to get this show on the road.
