Trouble TTC

Recently Diagnosed with PCOS

Hello Everyone,

I was diagnosed with PCOS this past Monday after doing an ultrasound and running blood work last week. My OB/GYN prescribed metformin since I am insulin resistant.  After reading about this, it has made a lot of things make since (overly hairy, acne issues, irregular periods after coming off BC, issues losing weight) so I am happy that I finally know what is going on.  I've been lurking here for the past couple of weeks trying to figure out what was ahead of me if the diagnose came back as PCOS and so here I am.  This board seems extremely knowledgeable and I cannot wait to learn from you all.

One of the biggest things that I am having trouble wrapping my head around is when to see an endocrinologist. My H and I have only been trying to conceive for 5 months but since I know that I have this, I want to get the ball rolling in the right direction. Any other wisdom will also be greatly appreciated as I am still learning about all of this.

Thanks in advance for all advice :)

Re: Recently Diagnosed with PCOS

  • I'm sorry you find yourself here, but welcome. The ladies here know their stuff!

Definitely get an appointment with an RE. You have an identified issue that you will have to have treated if you want to get pregnant. You'll see this sentence on this board multiple times: ob/gyns are great at keeping you pregnant, but REs are the ones who specialize in GETTING you pregnant. Sounds like you got a head start on things with the ob/gyn, but its time to move on to the experts.

  • I have PCOS and started seeing an RE about our 3rd month into TTC. I wish I went immediately after my diagnosis but stuck it out for a few months at my OBGYN.

Once I switched with my RE, I became much more comfortable and reassured I was under proper monitoring, had the necessary tests done to rule out other issues and had the best plan o get me pregnant.

Sorry you have to be here but welcome!

  • Welcome! I am/was in your boat. We started trying, but in my head I always assumed we would have issues due to my irregular cycle. I decided to see my OBGYN after trying for a few months. She ran a bunch of tests and diagnosed me with PCOS. Between her recommendation and reading threads here, I made and appointment with my RE right away. I am SO GLAD did. My RE ran some more tests (on me and DH) and now we have a game plan! I feel so much better having more information and a plan. Not to mention knowing that I'm in the hands of a doctor who is going to run the right tests and monitor me.

GL and FX for you! I hope your stay here is short!
  • Welcome! Sorry about your diagnosis, but I am glad you got an appointment to see an RE. The ladies here really know there stuff, and it is a fantastic support system! I hope your stay here is short and sweet.

  • Welcome!

I guess being dx with PCOS now is kind of a blessing too...you can fast track past the next 7 months of TTC and work with an expert. Plus, PCOS is the dx with the best success rates with treatment. :)

  • I did not realize that it had some of the best success rates.  That is great to hear!  Are there any questions that you would recommend asking the RE?  I creating a notebook to house all the questions to make sure that I ask the doctors while I am with them.
