Cars (Nbr)

So I was about to post in Thursday's bitchfest last night because my husband was super late coming home.  He went out with some friends (he has a small business with them, but I guarantee this was more of a social get-together), and promised me that he "wouldn't be late."  Well by the time it was 9pm, I was pissed, AND his phone was dead.  As I was about to post on here, I got a phone call from a number that I don't recognize.  It was him, and our car had been hit while parked (someone left a note, thank god), and I had to put our sleeping baby into a car seat and drive 20 minutes to get his ass.  Then we were there until about midnight getting it towed, the claim filed, blah blah blah.

And I LOVE our car.  He insisted on taking that car to work and out yesterday (which I won't let him live down for a while).  Some backstory: last year when we knew that a family wasn't far off, we traded in my car (my beautiful lime green mustang that I loved) to get a sedan, but we're both car obsessed.  I've always loved German cars, and I totally thought that this car was out of our league, but we got a great deal on a used 2013 Mercedes Benz C300 (black, of course).  I was so happy that this car would last us for many years to come and be a super safe car for the family.  Well last night it got smashed by a FIRE TRUCK.  Wtf?!?!?!?  Now we're dealing with the headache of insurance and police reports and rental cars.  I just want to cry... again.

I've had my share of accidents, and I've been pretty spoiled with nice vehicles since my dad is obsessed with cars as well.  I drove a purple mustang in high school/college ('96), then a shitty 1986 Accord when insurance dropped me for accidents hah (nicknamed put-put), then the green mustang ('06), now we have an Xterra and the Benz.

What do you guys drive?  Any good car stories?

That stinks about your car and I can understand how frustrating it would be to have to be out late with LO. Unless he parked illegally I don't understand the logic of being mad at him for it being hit while parked. Hopefully insurance pays out quickly so you can get out of that crummy 2014 Honda / Ford / etc. beater if a rental (that's nicer then most people drive) and back into your black (of course) Mercedes.

ETA: I drive a 2003 Toyota 4Runner that we love to death and my husband has a 2004 Chevy Colorado that is ok (we had go trade in his 2002 Toyota Tacoma due to needing space for a car seat. Wish we could have gotten another Tacoma)

    Ugh.

First of all, I'm not judging anyone on their cars.  Trust me, I even loved my little '86 hatchback Honda Accord.  I just develop a strong relationships with cars and cry every time I trade one in.  I'm telling you that I'm car obsessed, meaning that I love all cars.  Top Gear is my favorite show.  We choose to spend our money on nice cars while living in a little 3 bedroom ranch with 1 bathroom... it's just our personal preference.  In no way was I trying to be snobby... it's just that Mercedes look best in black.  But you can mock me... whatever.

It's frustrating that this car got hit in particular because 1) we were taking great care of it, and I'm not always good at keeping cars cleaned out, but this one was an exception 2) the trade-in value will drop drastically 3) I love my car, and it makes me sad 4) DH made a big deal about getting the baby stuff out so that he could take that car, so I was more being sarcastic about being angry at him for that... but I am mad at him for 5) being out much later than he said.  Luckily he was parked legally and it wasn't his fault but we will have to deal with the city paying us back our deductible (ugh). Our Xterra already had an incident last year with a deer, and I just wouldn't have been quite as upset/bummed about that car getting hit because we probably won't have it as long, so I wish he had had that out instead.

Also, I'll be fine with whatever rental car they give us as long as it's as safe and reliable as my car that's getting fixed.

  • Sorry abou your car :( I've always driven high mileage BMW coupes and LOVED them. We had to get a sedan to fit the baby and DH said no more rear wheel drive cars (not so good in the snow...) So I got a 2012 VW Passat SE. I really like it so far. It doesn't perform as well as my BMW but it was $20k cheaper than the comparable AWD BMWs. It still has the German ride and feel which I enjoy.

  • Nice cars... I will never have one.

We drive a 2004 Chevy Cavalier, which we honestly totally love and want another, and our second car is a 1997 Geo Metro which my mother is currently using, so we have her 2007 Chevy Aveo.

Sorry for your car troubles though, ours were in and out of the shop most of last winter, so I can sympathize about missing your car. Sucks to deal with the insurance crap too!

  • Ha...I drive an 06 Hyundai Sonata...it was my MIL s and she barely drove it. We got it when she gave up driving. She paid for the 100K mile warranty so I have either until next July or 18K more miles to drive it. It's not my ideal car...lol....but I LOVE that we have no car payment right now! We are going to get an Explorer when we are done with this one.

DH has a nice 2012 four door Ford F150 that is more our family car that we use when we all go somewhere. He is on the road a tremendous amount for work and is the one that needs the more comfortable and reliable car right now.

DH also has a 2004 Mach 1 Mustang. ...that is all souped up with a supercharger and other stuff I know nothing about...and I am terrified to drive it :-P If we sell it, LOs prepaid college will be completely funded....so hopefully that is in the works soon!

This is me. I had my first car for 13 years. I was SOBBING when I traded it in. I mean, to the point where they asked me to go to the restroom so that I wouldn't scare the other customers. I'm a little attached to my vehicles. AND we LOVE Top Gear. Love it.

I've got the Highlander. I wanted a 4 Runner so badly but they are way too tall for me to get a car seat into. Still, I love my Highlander. Love it.

  • I drive a 2008 Pontiac g6 and DH has a 2005 dodge magnum (this is the one I drive when I take DD anywhere bc I feel like its safer than mine). We have no car payment right now but I'm dreaming of the day that we trade mine in for a SUV.
  • We recently bought a higher mileage 2011 Cadillac SRX turbo which I LOVE. It's *by far* the nicest car I've ever owned. Its AWD which is important (lots of snow and ice 9 months out of the year here) and it had all the bells and whistles (I still haven't even tried figuring out all the crap in that car). The turbo is nice because according to reviews  the SRX without the turbo is very sluggish because its a heavier cross-over type vehicle. We plan to drive this car until it DIES.

H drives a 2012 F150 - its his company vehicle (he owns his company so he uses it as his personal vehicle as well) - but since he works in the oilfield that truck already has like 90,000 miles on it (he got it new) and is not in the best condition.

  • Picked up a Nissan Maxima rental today... got a compliment on it at the toll station, which I paid for in pennies since I'm used to having an EZ pass. Whoops. It's a nice car. Also talked to the damn city, and they are completely not helpful. We have to pay everything (deductible and rental) up front, and they might not reimburse us for the rental... great.

I love the snark on my "black, of course" comment. It's because you often see Mercedes (and BMWs and Audis) in black. It's lovingly referred to as German black. That is all.

I get it. So many of the luxury cars are black or silver here.

I have a red 2012 ford fusion, DH has a silver 2011 four door Ford F150.. We love the truck for the space as a family car, but I HATE how fast it sucks gas, since my fusion lasts forever.

My car story? I got rear ended in my fusion 3 days after I bought it. It didn't even have 100 miles on it :( And then 2 months later someone hit the rear door when they were trying to park, didn't leave a note, and drove off. The worst part is it was at work, and if I had noticed it sooner, I could have filed a report or tracked down who did it. (The building I was at the day had a very limited amount of individuals that parked there, so I wish I had noticed before I left, so I could have confronted the staff). Also, my deductible is about the same as the cost to repair the dent.. and I don't care to pay it, so my rear door has been slightly dented for going on 2 years.
  • We drive a 2012 Ford Focus (me) and a 1998 Camry (DH). I had a 2003 Mustang from my first car until about 6 months after having DD. DH totaled his last car so we bought the Focus then DH's grandma passed away and we were given her Camry which only had 30k miles on it bc she only drove it to the beauty parlor, grocery and church (she was 96). We sold the Mustang to a nice teenager and I seriously cried getting rid of my first car.

Yuck.  Hit and runs are the worst!!!  I had one in a parking garage.  People suck.

It also reminds me of this awesome story...
So I got my green mustang in 2007 (it was an '06).  I try to hunt for cars that are "like new" but not new, which was the case with that car.  It had less than 5,000 miles and an awesome 'pony package' with pretty wheels and whatnot.  I loved it, and still do.  Well a few weeks after I got it, my in-laws came to visit my then-boyfriend (now DH).  He has a son who was pretty young at the time, less than a year.  (Some relevant backstory on that: I was with DH for 4 or 5 months when he found out that he was about to become a dad [she had the baby like 2 weeks after he found out] with someone who he never really had an actual relationship with... fun times.  I was young, and I stuck it out, though it definitely wasn't easy.  But now his son is 8 and a pretty good kid.)  Back to the story now... we are leaving with his parents to go somewhere, and my now-FIL says, "I can't believe that someone did that to your car."  I'm like, "Ummm, what?"  Turns out someone carved 'BITCH' on my passenger side door.  I have NO IDEA who did it and chalked it up to living in a not-so-great neighborhood... though now I'm like 99% sure that it was his son's mother or one of her friends (who I really don't know at all).  Thank god for insurance because it cost over $1,000 to fix, though I of course had to pay the $250 deductible.  Now I keep thinking about how I can casually bring up 'that one time that someone keyed BITCH into my car' in front of her someday and see how she reacts.

    Omg that's terrible!!!
  • @addysmom22‌ I used to own a sunburst orange 2010 Jeep Patriot with a sun roof--- LOVED IT!
@SherryBaby2014‌ we are a one vehicle family too!

The reason why I say I used to own a 2010 Jeep Patriot is because my DH was driving too fast coming home one day 4 miles from the house when our paved road stopped and turned into loose dirt road he hit the gravel and flipped the jeep 4 times and hit an embankment he was fine only one small scratch on his pinky, but my patriot was totaled!!! Sad sad sad day for me! Glad DH was ok, but I lost a very good vehicle. Now we have a 2010 silver Toyota Corolla S.

This is my biggest fear with our Xterra. Glad to hear that he was ok, but sorry the car wasn't. :(

This spring I traded in my Ford Escape for a 2014 Honda CRV which I absolutely love! I have zero complaints with it. DH has a 14 f150. My first car was a 1988 Mazda 323 in Shit brown it only had 350000 kms on it.

Lol, "shit brown." One dealer referred to it as "uncomfortable brown."
