Breech ...... Kinda dumb question

okay so this is baby 3 for me (oldest 2 are almost teenagers) and I know it's a dumb question but when do babies turn from breech to normal birth position. I'm 28 weeks on Monday and as of yesterday's so fun appointment LO is in the breech position. I'm going to assume with having 12 weeks left we still have plenty of time for her to flip around. But what weeks do they normally flip?

  • I had the same question! My LO is transverse and loves to be that way
  • I was told yesterday by my midwife that since this is my second baby "he has plenty of room to flip around in there."  I think that typically they flip and stay head down around 35 weeks.

  • i had a breech baby who never turned so I had a sched C-sec.  This baby was breech at 24 weeks and Dr said at 32 they will check again and every appt there after but we'd need to get a c-sec date on the books at that time just in case.

Ive been going to a chiro since day 1 to help with pelvis alignment and Ive been trying to do hip openers

    spinningbabies.com has some information
  • Ugh this baby has been transverse every time I've been checked. I'm only 25 week so I know there's plenty of time but I'd really prefer she start working on getting in a better position soon.

I asked My OB this at 20 wks. She said they sometimes flip several times a day at this point and that she won't start checking for position until 36 weeks.
That's exactly what my OB said. My baby seems to prefer the transverse position best at this point.
  • Had a c/s with DD due to breech presentation, she never flipped! I had 2x weekly nst's and ultrasounds and not once did she move >< so frustrating.  That being said I'm going for a VBAC this time and OB said not to worry until 36 weeks and if baby is breech/transverse he may try to turn him then.

Also your doc or midwife will in the weeks to come, help you get the baby in the right position.
  • I am 27 weeks and LO has turned head down and beginning to drop. Generally if baby is still breech at 35-36 weeks they will schedule a c/s and continue to monitor to see if baby turns. I think they would rather have it scheduled than have you go into labor on your own and have to do an emergent c/s. LO still has plenty of time to turn on his/her own though :-)
  • Depends on what baby number this is but some kids can be turned (external cephalic version) by a doc that knows what they are doing.

I don't think anyone should stress before 34 weeks.

My first flipped head down around 30 weeks and stayed there up until about 5 days before my water broke.  I went swimming and for some reason she decided to flip around breech while i was in the pool. I felt the difference immediately upon getting out. Over the day or two she turned back head down at some point while I was sleeping and was born vaginally when my water broke.

My second, he was very flippy.  He settled head down around 34 or 35 weeks.  I went in labor with him at 37 weeks.

Baby number 3 right now is all different directions. 27 weeks and he doesn't stay in the same position for more than a few hours. He flops around all night long now too.  During the day he seems to like to cram himself at the very top of my uterus kind of in a curled up transverse position, almost like he's on all fours. lol  He likes to jam his butt up under my ribs. He'll turn head down eventually. I'm not too worried about it at this point, though come to think of it I didn't worry about it with my first two either.

  • Many times in second and beyond pregnancies a baby will not turn from breech until active labor. Breech is actually just a different version of normal and can still be birthed as well!
