Hugo

I'd love to get DH on board with Hugo if this one is a boy (team green).

Hugo is the name of his late grandfather and late uncle, so in addition to it being underused and appealing to me it has family significance on his side. He doesn't hate it but he's not sold. I think it's too "out there" for him. I also like that it means ""bright in mind" because DD's name has a "Bright" meaning. MN would likely be Charles, the MN of both of our Dads. Our last name is French and is a variation of the FN Collette. DD is Claire.

Love it? Hate it?

Besides me recently throwing Hugo in the mix, our other top boy choices is Theodore David (this has been on our list for 4 years when we were team green with DD).

Hugo is great. I'm overTheodore, you and about 50 other bump users have declared it their name in the last two weeks alone. Way too popular for me all of a sudden.

I hear you. It has gotten more popular over the last few years, just as my DD Claire's name has risen around / after the time we named her, but popularity doesn't bother me as much if it's a classic name like Theodore or Claire. Popular and classic is different than a trendy name which will rise and fall, and be completely dated. I don't know any Theodores, but I suppose it's much closer to a surge than Hugo.

Just thought I would mention, Hugo also means "juice" in spanish. I went to school w/ Hugo, he was only called Juice as a NN throughout school (might not be an issue if you are not geographically close to many spanish speakers). I love Theodore.
Edit: proper spelling "jugo", can be pronounced same as Hugo

Interesting. Hugo is the #2 name in Spain pronounce OO-go. I don't think that jugo = Hugo especially not in my area of the country.

  • This is my current favorite name on my boy short list! I like the sound and love the meaning. Originally when I had brought it up during my pregnancy with DS my H vetoed it but just a few months ago I mentioned my fondness for it and he said "did I really veto that? I like it".

Moral of the story: let it rest awhile, it might grow on him!

Jugo (juice) is pronounced more like Who-go (like Who goes there?) Hugo, for an English speaker, is like Hugh-go.
    Yes, we'd pronounce it Hugh-go.
