Success after IF

Success with poor quality Embryos?

Had ET today for my first IVF cycle. Of the 10 eggs retrieved, 6 fertilized, by today only 3 made it. My RE said they are poor quality and put all remaining 3 in. I'm beyond upset, this was most likely our only shot. Anybody have success with poor quality embryos? Looking for hope.

Re: Success with poor quality Embryos?

  • Mine were not graded as poor, but close...In addition to the typical letter/ number system, my clinic had four general categories for embryo grades (excellent, good, fair, and poor). I had a previous cycle with a textbook perfect embryo. At ET, I sobbed when the doctor told me. Sixteen embryos from that cycle and the two they wanted to transfer were fair. The doctor gave me that cliche saying, "Sometimes the ugliest embryos make the most beautiful babies." And, mine did. I have two perfect and wild little boys.

    Fingers crossed for you.

  • If you start reading up on embryo quality and success rates you'll find that embryo grading doesn't really translate into success rates.  Science has come a long way but it's still not to the point of even beginning to understand why one embryo implants/grows/creates a baby and another doesn't.

I had four embryos going into my IVF.  We transferred the best looking two and I got pregnant with a singleton, so one of those great looking ones didn't take.  Then, one expired and we froze the other, poorer quality embryo.  Six years later, I'm pregnant with that poor quality embryo from a FET.

    You just never know.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
