Breastfeeding question

For the past couple days, LO has been going crazy at the breast. She keeps throwing her head back, coming off the nipple, then frantically tries to get back on. I'll bring her upright, thinking she may need to be burped, and then she'll scream bloody murder until I put her back on the breast. Only to repeat the process all over again. At some point, she'll feed quietly for a few minutes without incident, but will inevitably have another freak out again later in the feeding.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? Thanks in advance for your input!

Re: Breastfeeding question

  • Reflux? Hurting her as she's trying to eat?

Try nursing her in an upright position with her legs straddling one of yours. I nursed like that for a while when LO was going crazy while nursing too. It made it so the flow of milk into her mouth was slower because she's working against gravity instead of with it.

age? doing any bottles?  think it may be a supply issue?  is the doing it the whole nursing session? at all the times of the day?

She's 3 months. No bottles other than when my mom babysits occasionally (about once per week). She's been doing it at all times of day, morning to night, but she doesn't do it for the entire feed. Like right after I started this thread, she went into a 15 minute period of normal feeding.

For a second I thought maybe no milk was coming out, but when I hand express, it's there. So maybe it's just coming out too fast at times?

  • Is she doing it in the evening? LO used to do this when my milk flow would slow in the evening. She wanted her milk faster! :-) Or maybe a growth spurt? LO will also do this if she's hungrier than normal during a growth spurt.

I think we just came out of a growth spurt, because our normal 10-15 minute feeder was going for 40-60 minutes at a time. Now we're back to around 15 minutes, but she's fussier than usual at the breast.

  • My LO was doing this a couple of weeks ago. It was so annoying.  I just kept changing up the nursing positions until I found something that made her calm down. I think one time I ended up nursing her vertically while I was walking around.  Whatever works!  It's probably not a supply issue if you have milk coming out.

  • We're having the same thing! She did this around the 10 week mark and it lasted about 5 days or so. Now she's 15 weeks and we're on day 3 of fuss pot feedings. Hoping it stops soon for you and me!

  • Happens in phases for us. I think it's related to growth spurts. Hang in there!
  • My ds has been doing this too. Its like he doesnt know what he wants he just goes nuts and is practically yanking my nipple off. We went through a spell similar to this before hopefully it ends soon.
  • I think it's a phase too.  DD2 does this off and on.  Sooo frustrating but just power through.  I remember DD1 doing this also and eventually went back to normal all the time.

  • We've had the same thing. I ended up nursing him while walking around and patting his back. It only lasted a few days and he's back to normal. I think it was a growth spurt.
  • My lactation consultant said that they do this because the letdown is too fast, atleast in my case.
  • My DS does this periodically too. It usually lasts a few days and it's only in the evening. According to MIL I must have eaten something he doesn't like. ::eyeroll:: I too think it is related to growth spurts/wonder weeks.

  • Ive noticed this happening a lot either when two things... let down too fast after LO not eating for awhile stretch, or milk not coming out fast enough. Since LO started day care she's been with bottles for awhile which is much easier to receive milk faster...
  • @jenniferurs my LO does this lately too. Here is my theory- she has stimulated me to make more milk but it's more than she needs right now. So she gets full but still wants the comfort of sucking the boobie. But she's full and gets mad that milk won't stop coming when she's sucking. I base this on the fact that I can give her a pacifier (keeping her in the same nursing position on the boppy or my Brest friend) and she will instantly be extremely content and fall asleep.

Try giving her a pacifier and see if it works for you too! She otherwise won't usually nap with me so it's been kind of nice :)

  • My LO takes two bottles a day, as he is at daycare during the afternoon. I sometimes find he is like you described our next feeding. I guess for him maybe the difference between breast-feeding and bottles. Yesterday he had four bottles and when we finally nursed before bed he was on and off and I felt like we were in a wrestling match!
  • @jenniferurs‌ my LO had the same issue usually when I was really full. The ped told me that my letdown was really fast and that's why she was throwing herself back like that. Ped suggested I hand express or even pump for a minute or so to take the edge off. Once I started doing that with my AM feeding and anytime I was feeling full, she stopped her crazy acrobatics routine :) good luck!!
  • My DD stopped being as crazy and settled back in like Sunday. How are you guys doing?
