Cloth Diapering

Another yeast rash post... so stumped.

So I've been CD for 5 months now. DD is ebf. Haven't changed my routine at all and she has white bumps up her bum crack and starting to get in fat rolls near her vagina. I treated it with lotramin in disposables and it went away and then she got a bad red burn looking rash in the disposables. So I switched back to cloth, the red cleared up and now the bumps are back. I took her to the pedi and she doesn't think it's a yeast rash and told me to try cortizone. I disagree and think it's yeast beings the lotramin took it away before. I've treated all her diapers with bleach and vinegar in final rinse. I cold rinse, hot wash with tide to line 2 with bleach, then 2 cold rinsesas with vinegar. I'm now using California babies diaper rash cream and otherwise use CJs. I'm stumped and frustrated. Never had a rash prior to this and changed nothing in my diet or routine. What gives?

  • I have to wonder if the pH of your diapers is too acidic for your baby's skin, since you added vinegar to those last rinses. If you really feel you must use vinegar, I would follow it with some warm water rinses/washes, just to make sure all the vinegar is out.

Also, there's some information here about different methods of laundering your diapers when dealing with a yeast infection. There's a bit about vinegar towards the bottom, and it doesn't look like vinegar is very helpful.

  • @freezorburn‌ if the acidity is the issue what could have caused it you think? I've never used vinegar before she initially got the yeast rash. I just did that after she got the rash to kill potential yeast in the diapers. Also I know vinegar balances out the bleach so was that a bad idea? I just did that because other cd mom's in my bmb suggested it.

  • Whenever we've had yeast it's been red not white

Hmm. What about white bumps on red? I'd post a pic but is that weird? Haha

  • No, people post rash pics here frequently. Just cover up all the bits.

  • OK cool thanks so much ladies! I'll post as soon as she wakes up :)

  • Yeah, post a pic. It doesn't sound like yeast.

Why are using using bleach in every wash? You shouldn't really need to do that. Perhaps she is sensitive to all the bleach and vinegar?

  • @Brandiewine11‌ sorry, I meant that was my wash for disinfecting for yeast. My normal routine up to that point was the same minus bleach and vinegar. I use BG 4.0s and have done a bleach washave only 2 times in 5 months and never had any issues at all.

  • Just to clairfy, I cold rinse, hot wash with tide original, and 2 cold rinses. No bleach or vinegar regularly. This was the first time with vinegar and have only bleached twice before. I usually wash 20 diapers at a time.

  • ok. that makes more sense :-)

  • Here is said rash. I apologize if this isn't covered enough:image

  • That does not look like yeast, but I have no idea what it is.

Did you try the cortisone like the doctor suggested? Just because lotrimin helped doesn't mean it is yeast. You also put her in a sposie, so that could have helped too.

If the pedi isn't sure what it is, perhaps a dermatologist can help? It really doesn't look like other diaper rashes I have seen.

  • You said she's EBF. Any changes in your diet recently? Is she in the care of anyone else during the day, who may have been sneaking her food that she is not ready for yet (it's been known to happen). Just throwing out ideas.

No food sneaking. I stay at home with her and no diet changes. I'm pretty strict with it as she has a dairy allergy so I read everything.

@Brandiewine11‌ can I use cortisone with cloth? And if notcan I use receiving blanket material as a liner to protect the diapers? Would that be thick enough? I would like to continue using cloth as the disposables keep giving her a nasty burn looking rash

  • That is not yeast.  Are you drying the crack during diaper changes?  Make sure you pat dry.  And yes, you can use cortisone with cloth, or use a receiving blanket as a liner, whatever you like.

Yes definitely. I blow her bum compeletely dry after every change and use only water and a drop of Johnsons baby soap mixture in a spray bottle with cloth wipes. I even let her go diaper free for a long time several times a day.

  • Are there a lot of acidic foods in your diet?

    @Chickypoo2468‌

Hahaha funny you should say that because I've done that before with the no heat setting. But the mouth bacteria thing us interesting however I guess that would be super weirday if that were the case.

Are there a lot of acidic foods in your diet?

I don't think so but maybe? I haven't changed anything so that's what has me stumped but I know their digestive systems change as they get older so maybe she's processing things differently?

I've been using straight up organic coconut oil on it and it seems to be helping! So I'm going to continue that for a day or so and see if it clears up completely or just holding it at bay.

Glad the coconut oil is helping!

Try looking up the pH of everything you eat/drink for a couple of days. You might be surprised. Or not. Either way, it's an interesting exercise.
  • Also I wonder about the baby soap on your wipes. Maybe just use water. If it's not getting rinsed away it could be irritating. My kid gets a rash on his torso when I used johnsons baby bath. And it was in the tub and getting rinsed away.
