My Birth Story - MissN06

I know I only became active on the board in the last 5-6 weeks but I wanted to share for mommas who might have an unplanned c-section.

Short Version: Induced at 40 weeks started at 2 cm and 80%, spent 12 hours getting fully dilated, pushed for 2 and then had to have a c-section.

Long emotional version:

I went in for induction and was really up beat and positive because LO was arriving that day hopefully. We got checked in and shortly have 9 am I was hooked up to the monitors and had almost a full bag of fluids in me by 9:30 and pitocin was started 15 minutes later alarms started beeping my nurse had me roll over on my left side and was sliding DDs heart rate monitor around and then told me she needed to stimulate baby and worked on rubbing babies head. She rolled me on my right side more stimulating and the alarms went off. DDs heart rate had dropped into the 80s so they were working on bringing it back up during all my rolling. She stopped the pitocin and told me she was going to talk to Dr as soon as he was out of the OR.

Dr. Came in and broke my water so he could hook a wire directly into DDs head to monitor heart rate in the event the outside monitor was picking it up DDs hear rate incorrectly and also place a sensor to pick up my contractions directly. He then said to start the pitocin again and he would check on things after another C-section. While he was in the OR and shortly after the pitocin started, I had my vitals taken and had to sit up for my lungs to get checked. DD had another heart rate drop but recovered quickly when I laid back down, nurse stopped pitocin to be safe. Dr. came back in to check on things and had the pitocin restarted and put in a float so more water was pumped in so DD would be laying on a bed of water because he thought she might be grabbing her cord or laying on it causing her heart rate to drop . Shortly after that DDs heart rate dropped back into the 40s the nurse came running in, DD recovered with me just rolling over from my back to my right side. Nurse stopped the pitocin just to be safe.

Dr. came back after the surgery he was in and agreed with the nurse that DDs heart rate dropping is related to the pitocin because it always happened right after it was started. Thankfully I was progressing without it so I wasn't put on it again. I received my epidural some time around this point.

After my epidural I felt a lot better and even invited a few family members in 2 at a time to visit. During this we told my mom and DH's mom about the heart rate drops and how we fixed them. The grandmas were releaved everything was okay with DD and MIL went out and bought the monitor for home to clip to DD's diaper to help prevent SIDS.

Finally after 12 hours and 1 nap in there I was able to start pushing. At this point I was fully dilated and effaced. DD was also at a stage 2. After 2 hours of pushing DD wasn't down any further Dr. came and watched me push and he noticed that not only did DD not move down but after she didn't move back up In between. He determined we needed to do a c-section. DH went out to tell his family and my mom. My mom came back to see me while I was starting to be prepared it was now 10:30 at night.

Doctor was great in the OR ( I was his 4th but only none scheduled c-section for the day) he was done and stitching me up in just over 30 minutes. My epidural was increased and during the whole process all I ever felt was pressure. Dr had some trouble getting LO out because her head was stuck in my pelvic bone and would have never fit through. I made DH hold DD as soon as the nurses finished checking her out so that way she could be comforted and stop crying. It really bothered me she was crying while I finished getting stitches up. DH wasn't going to hold her at first because originally I wanted to be the first to hold her. During the c-section I kept shaking like I had cold chills but was told that roughly 85% of women do this due to the combo of hormones and pain meds.

I was so realeaved to see her and then when they unstrapped my arms and I was back in the room DH was able give her to me. I was back in my room roughly 1 hour from when I left. During the 30 minutes of recovery DD sucked down 30 ml of formula at this point I was way to tired to even attempt breast feeding I wanted her fed ASAP. We let parents come in to see her after being out there so long supporting from a distance and they took pictures for 20ish minutes, grandmas cried. Then they grabbed our bags and moved them it our postpartum room and went home for the night.

Finally at 2 am we were able to go to sleep after we ha hers and my vitals taken, DH and I ate and DD got her first bath. DD needed to be fed at 3 so DH said he would take care of it and let me sleep.

She is amazing and miss Aubrey is well loved. I'm working on c-section recovery and it's been harder then I realized because with them being so common i forgot about how major of a surgery it really is. Not to mention I think I way over did it and didn't take my pain meds as soon as I should have (my hospital will bring it to you when you ask and not automatically and the next time). DH has been great about bringing her to me and learning how to change diapers and burp her. She was his first diaper he's ever changed.

Hope this makes sense it's 3:30 here and it's been just over 24 hours. Really wanted to type this out so I could remember it. I'll edit tomorrow.

Edit to fix a crap load of poor grammar

It really was the smoothest part. It's been interesting these last 24 hours learning about the difference between c-section babies and vaginal babies. They adjusted the crib so she is more vertical because she is more likely to spit up and they have us keep a bulb syringe in her crib so we can suck out any thing she spits up right away. They also made sure we knew how to stop choking.

We had some trouble with DD getting more then 6 mls of food down at a time until around the 24 hour mark. She puked up a large amount of stomach mucus and now is drinking up to an ounce every 2-2.5 hours (my milk hasn't come in yet and so far neither has my colostrum). The nurses said because during vaginal the pushing of baby out helps clear this but that doesn't happen with a c-section. That has been our only issue with DD since she was born.
  • Congrats mama! :)
