Imaginative Play

DD is starting to engage in imaginative play and she LOVES to pretend that she is a puppy.  The only problem is that she wants me to join in with her...in public.  At places like the grocery store and in Golden Gate Park (this past weekend) she's been like "Mommy, puppy, come!" meaning "Get down on your hands and knees and pant and bark with me!"  I'm pretty willing to be silly, but I just can't bring myself to play puppy in Aisle 5 of Safeway!

What does playtime look like for your kids these days?

Re: Imaginative Play

  • B loves to pretend to cook and wash dishes in her kitchen. She will also grab my wallet and keys and say 'I go!' And get in her little car, like she's heading to the store.

She pretends to be a dinosaur (complete with a scary growly noise) and tonight at playschool she fed a baby doll a 'baba.'

It's really fun to watch her start to mimic our behavior!

  • DD's favorite pretend game is pretending to eat imaginary food, and offering it to others. She'll pretend to pluck something out of the bath water and feed it to me, saying it is a banana or a strawberry. Then she'll feed herself the same pretend way and say, "Mmm, that's good."

Another thing she does that I find hilarious is reading her books like a teacher reading to a class. Even with no audience, she turns the page and then holds it up in one hand over her shoulder as if she's showing it to a classroom.

She's obsessed with my purse right now too. When I take it back she says, "No taka my purse, Mommy!"

  • DD is constantly making objects into other items, for example she will float something over her head and call it a balloon.  She also has now started pretending scenarios, like crawling away from monsters or riding horses on Daddy.  It is so much fun!  She also has a stuffed dog and now she says "doggy do it too!" to everything and will pretend to bathe Doggy, feed/dress him, etc.  I love love love it.

  • I love all these stories! @Sep5Bride‌ the reading to the class thing is hilarious!! I have to remember to write this stuff down so I can tell DD when she's older.

  • I run around playing dinosaur and airplane when we're at the playground/park. Anywhere else I'd just say, "you know what, mom doesn't feel like playing dog right now" and leave it at that.

I'm trying to help her set boundaries. I want her to learn that if other people don't want to do something to leave them alone and that sometimes it's okay for her to say no also. Like when she tries to grab her best friends' hand and T doesn't want to I tell DD "T doesn't want to hold hands now so why don't you go slide/swing/run" I just suggest something else.

If I wouldn't let her do it to another kid, I don't let her do it to me.
  • That's a difficult one, because you want to encourage creative play but it isn't for every environment. And if she is like J, she doesn't respond well to no. Does distraction work at all still? Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't for us. J is responding really well to choosing one of two options lately.

J really loves his cars, trucks and trains. Basically anything with wheels. He makes car noises, jumps them, parks them, etc. He also plays really well with his play kitchen and play food and loves to pretend to eat food. He'll bring us play food to "eat" tooo. It's really sweet!

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • T is getting big on this now, too! He loves having his toy kitties meow or his dogs bark, etc. Also pretty much everything is an airplane in the right moment. He loves playing with his trucks, too, and is often racing them. He will also do the same where he pretends to eat pieces of something and then offers to us. So funny! We are actually buying him a toy kitchen, grill, and tool bench for his Christmas/Birthday gifts so I'm sure that will encourage even more!

  • @jobiann, @this decaf life - Yeah, me not wanting to be a puppy at times isn't too big a problem.  I'll say "not right now" and she'll either move on or cry/protest for a few seconds and THEN move on.  I do like to be playful when I can, but sometimes its just not gonna happen!

DD loves taking care of her baby dolls and dog toy. She also loves playing with her kitchen set and making us coffee to drink. She's loves to make up songs and dances too. Love watching her little imagination work.

DD LOVES to make coffee for me! She calls it 'hot.'

I really want the Hape coffee set for DD's kitchen. She hasn't "made" me coffee but she recognizes my mug of coffee so she might have fun doing that. She warns me when the soup she makes is "hot"
