Bed bugs!

One of my friends came over with a bag of clothes for dd she's been wanting to bring by since we've been home from the hospital.

After I went through all of the clothes and had them displayed on my kitchen table she tells me that I should pack them all back up in the bag until I have time to wash them as her mom had bed bugs and that's where the clothes have been. Eek!

I'm really appreciative of anything I get but really? She has a washer and dryer she couldn't have washed them first? I would of washed them anyway but it still freaks me out a bit. So until I can wash them they are sitting outside in the freezing cold on my deck. I'm gonna google to make sure that washing the clothes will kill the little buggers if they are there but anybody know or have any experience? I really just wanted to vent a little but any advice if there are little buggies in the clothes would be welcome too. My friends never fail to make my life a little more interesting lol.

  • Yeah screw that! THROW IT AWAY!!! Or give it back... Three days after I got home from the hospital I discovered we somehow got these awful AWFUL creatures! Either from the hospital or clothes from a girl I work with who kept emphasizing that they needed washed. Our home just finished up a third round of chemical sprays and needs another one in another month because we still have them they are hard to get rid of and we have invested almost a grand into this. We're living out of garbage bags and have been for seven weeks (all of our clothes we left in tied up garbage bags) because we had to run all of our clothes and linen through the dryer which supposedly kills them and it took forever... Tell your friend thanks, but no thanks I can't wait until our life is back to normal because they suck!
  • I would personally throw them away... But if you want to keep them wash them and dry them the heat kills them
  • I would bring them back to her house. What kind of "friend" brings a bag of clothes that was in a house infested with bed bugs?!

  • Throw them out!!! Bed bugs are awful and are so hard to get rid of. My brother is a paramedic and he went to a house with bed bugs, first he said it was disgusting bugs everywhere you looked, second the station made them shower at the hospital where they took the lady and just throw away their uniforms and they got them new ones just to reduce the risk of bringing them home. Free clothes are awesome but not worth it

This.... the heat of the dryer is supposed to kill them but I would probably just throw them out. Not worth it to me. Deep freezing also kills them, but I'm not sure how long they need to be in the freezer.

  • Ugh I feel bad throwing out clothes, especially since I don't really know if they have bugs on them, but I don't think it's worth it! Many of the clothes were Halloween onesies that probably wouldn't fit her now anyway...it stinks I can't even donate them! Funny I won't donate them to strangers but my friend thinks its perfectly ok to bring them here and tell me to wash em ugh!
  • I work in a group home and they got bed bugs, I use to strip outside behind my car and throw everything i was wearing at work into a garbage bag and drive home in a big sweat suit then throw the work clothes straight into the wash. It took us a month to clear the building and that was with help from professionals... as company policy, none of those residents are allowed to donate or share clothes with anyone outside that home for at least 6 months after the last treatment of their home. I honestly would just burn the clothes rather than risk it,

  • Throw them away!! You don't need that shit anywhere near a new baby.

My 13yo spent the night at a friends house and the family didn't realize or didn't want to admit what they had was bed bugs. I was so pissed because my dd text me to pick her up very suddenly and when I got there she came out and had been eaten alive while she was there. She still has scars and this was in early spring. I had her throw away shoes and clothes and anything that was too expensive to toss (jeans, jacket) went straight into the washer on hot wash 3 times and dried 3 times. I even inspected her case for her tablet and was ready to toss it but kept it in an air tight container because it's too expensive to get rid of. I wouldn't even let her touch anything until she had showered thoroughly.

We were lucky that we didn't get those nasty creatures in my house. They are so hard to get rid of and the bites are terrible also. She actually saw one crawl across something and I looked bed bugs up online in an array of like 12 different bugs and she easily picked out a bed bug. Makes me itch just thinking about it.
  • Ok I'm throwing them out! It really isn't worth it! I don't think my friend realizes how big of a deal they are to get rid of! I can't just move and I don't have a landlord to take care of this stuff like she does. She doesn't really take a lot of pride in the places she lives. We have been friends since our early 20's and unfortunately she just hasn't grown up and doesn't understand how horrible this could have been. All I can say is thank goodness she told me and I didn't just throw the clothes in with the rest of the laundry!
  • I agree with everyone else. It's definitely not worth it. Throw everything away.
  • Toss it in a metal garbage bin and light it on fire.

    (Although that's probably illegal...)

  • Once again... They are awful... AWFUL demon bugs I don't wish these on my worst enemy I pray to God mine are gone after our next treatment and for good
  • If you had them displayed on your table, it's still possible that they are in your house. I would be having a panic attack! I would kill my friend!! I nearly killed my BIL for bringing his dog to my house when he had fleas. Those are a bitch also! My babysitter sarah is in pest control. He said it costs about $1/sq ft to treat your house for bed bugs. Whoa... He also told me that spraying rubbing alcohol will kill them. He told me this in case I ever saw one in my classroom. I really hope you don't have them!
  • I had bed bugs and you want to throw that stuff away. Washing in hot hot water and drying on hot will kill them but I wouldn't risk it. It was seriously the worst month of my life when we had to treat the house for them. They aren't dangerous and don't carry any diseases but they do itch and are a horrid pest. They are notoriously impossible to get rid of.

How did you get rid of them in just a month we didn't even have them very bad (the pest company could find no signs other than the bites all over my body and the one bug I found) we've had three treatments over the past seven weeks and still need one more im tempted to throw my couch away (that's where they are living)
