Promoting Independent play

I wanted to know what you all are doing for your LO's independent play. I am having to constently intertain my DS when awake and while it's so cute to see his reactions it is also exausting and I can't get anything done! I want to promote more independent play with him, so what are you doing, what kind of gadget's do you have? I have a rnp but it's kind of borning because there is nothing overhead for him to bat at.

Re: Promoting Independent play

  • Our Play mat and swing both have mobiles
  • Loading the player...
  • I start with the playmat. She's usually content with that long enough for me to make breakfast. Then swing when she gets fussy and ready for a nap.

  • I wish I could wear him but he hates it! I have bought and tried 3 different kinds with no luck. I'm definitely not looking for hours of independent play, it's more like 15 mins so I can eat and even have time to wash his bottles! Oh and I did mention that he basically does not nap unless I'm holding him!

My guy loves the playmat, he's started batting at the toys and loves staring at himself in the mirror and kicking his feet. The brand is Tiny Love.

  • You could try different positions to sleep. Like the crib instead of the RnP. But my pedi said for me to only let LO have like 5 mins of tummy time a few times a day. It's a workout for their little bodies. 9/10 LO falls asleep on the mat!! Lol
  • My LO loves the mobile on her swing she'll sit there swinging... Just watching it... Even smiles at it sometimes

My girl loves her play mat. She will lookt and bat at toys long enough for me to fold a load of laundry, if I'm fast. I feel like that is promoting individual play. However, our kiddos are so small individual play is going to be very short.

  • Try a bouncer with toy bar , it may give you a few minutes , mine like it for up to 10 minutes tops . I put my twins side by side in the bassinet part of the pnp , they entertain each other for a little bit , long enough to change sheets , fold quick laundry , guzzle down some caffeine , we have not purchased swings yet but with my other children they were great .
  • I felt the same way at first. Now that my lo is 10 weeks and has more interest, I'll put her on the playmat (infantino) for a bit. She really likes the mirror. I'll try to get some things done especially make myself a meal or chores or just a little me time until she starts to fuss. I also keep her in the RnP near me in the kitchen as I do dishes etc. Sometimes she'll watch me, sometimes she'll look around and during all this, I'll chat with her and she'll smile back

  • LO loves his mobile. I can get a few minutes to eat when he is watching it. You probably aren't going to get a lot more than that out of them.

  • DS likes his activity gym. He will lay under that contentedly for around 15 minutes sometimes. He also likes to sit in his bouncy seat and watch what we are doing. He's getting better about not fussing when not being held, but I've been noticing he does like to be in the same room as the rest of us so he can have some interaction. Have you tried moving LO around with you wherever you are trying to do something? Maybe it would help if he could see you and you could talk to him while still getting something done.

  • LO loves her play mat. She will lay on it until she falls asleep. She also likes to lay on my bed while I put away clothes and watch the ceiling fan.
  • DS loves his owl mobile!! It plays bird sounds and he is absolutely taken with it!! If he has been fed and changed, he can sometimes watch it for a good 30 mins or so!! He doesn't care so much for the music setting, so maybe the animal noises are more entertaining?
  • Mine loves his rainforest play gym by FP. He's mesmerized by the lights and has started batting/kicking the lower objects. At 8wks he'll stay for 30-40 min perfectly content and my DS has been pretty colicky otherwise. Worked great with DS1 too, both are bored by the non light up gym in less than 10 min.

  • we have good luck with the play mat and swing. She'll bat at the toys on the play mat for a solid stretch of time and then fall asleep. Our swing has a little mobile and mirror she likes to stare at. Both get lots of coos and giggles out of her when I'm doing stuff around the house or I need a break from holding her.

  • We have this mobile (link below) and LO loooves it. We put a little fan blowing on it to make it move and sometimes he even cries when we pick him up cuz he wants to keep watching, lol.
