Cleaning Person- what to ask for?

is there some kind of insurance or something that a company should have? Any good questions to ask or considerations to think of? Any help at all? We have no idea where to start. TIA!

Re: Cleaning Person- what to ask for?

  • What PW said. We looked for "licensed, bonded, and insured". We pay a flat fee every 2wks and decided together what would be done every visit, then he does whatever extras he has time for.

I had a couple companies walk through before I decided on this one. The general feel you get from them will make a big difference in your satisfaction, I think. Even if someone else did the same exact job, I'd feel different if I didn't trust them like I do our cleaner.

  • if they have flexible hours or set hours, if they bring their own cleaning material or use yours, what exactly is included in their cleaning agreement; some companies would not do ironing, etc. some would for an additional charge. some consider some items to be "deep cleaning" and would cost more.

all in all it's the best thing I ever did to hire an independant cleaner through a local forum. we agreed our own timing/procedure/payment/fees, etc

You mean like a local fb page?

Where else do you find a cleaning company? Someone I know mentioned theirs so I was going to ask her for recommendations. I'd love to just put it out on fb. I know there are people I used to work with that I have cleaning person but I think our families would think it was pretentious and then our friends wouldn't tell us who they use. We are from solidly middle class families. They would think we are crazy for paying someone to do this.

  • We kept the cleaner that the previous owners had used (and the landscape company, pool company, electrician).  We lucked out in getting a file of EVERYTHING from the previous owners.

I would ask for the world - recently discovered while TOTing with neighbors that one woman has a cleaner who cleans their windows every two weeks (in and out!) and another has a deep clean rotation (fans, baseboards, oven, etc) so that everything gets done every few months.

  • we found our cleaner on a local classifieds website, but as I'm not in the status it's irrelevant to you. It isn't too snazzy to hire a cleaner directly, she costs us much less than hiring a company and we get the flexibility and personal interaction

We got recommendations from our friends. It was amazing, when DH finally agreed to hire a cleaner and I bragged to my friends, most of them had a cleaner, and all of them were happy to provide recommendations.

Our selling point for who we picked? She'll change all the linens on the beds when she first arrives, start them in the washer, and toss them in the dryer before she leaves. (Not sure how this would work if you had enough sheets that they wouldn't all fit in one load.)
Changing the sheets is a great idea!
