Hi ladies from VA! I have heard Sibley doesn't have a NICU. Not that I expect to need or use it, and I love my doctor and am very comfortable at Sibley. It's very convenient for us. But the no NICU thing is curious to me. Do Babies go to Children's if they need a NICU?
PS. @finchfeeder80 my EDD is 6-12-14! One day before you.

I think it would depend on the circumstance. If baby needed a little bit of extra care, they might transport to Children's. If baby is severely ill or a micro preemie they might life flight you and baby to Fairfax for the level 4 NICU. But you'd likely know prior to delivery if you were going to be in a life threatening situation. If you and your doctor are confident and you have an uneventful pregnancy, I wouldn't worry about it.
Hi guys! I haven't even made an intro yet (will do that as soon as I am done with this post!), but I wanted to pass along what I know... I delivered at Sibley with my first at 36 weeks (epidural). They had NICU pediatricians on staff there, and had there been a problem, I would have been sent to Georgetown. I delivered my second baby at INOVA Alexandria at 39 weeks (Med-free) and had a great experience. Happy to talk about either experience if anyone would like more info - just PM me.

Hello! I'm delivering at GW, although now I live near VHC and am thinking about switching. I love my GW OB though so I'll probably stick it out there.
I have lots of friends who love Sibley though! One friend delivered at 35 weeks and her son was in the NICU there for a few days, so they at least have something if there aren't serious problems. I think they called it the special care nursery?
I'm in D.C., but I'm going to deliver at Alexandria. According to my OB, they'll soon have a "baby friendly" designation and as a first-time mom I want some extra time with the lactation consultants, etc. I also did a rotation at Alexandria in nursing school, worked in the NICU, ante/postpartum and L&D, and loved the nursing staff. I have a few friends who work at Sibley and say great things about their staff, too!

I
really loved my experience at Alexandria. The lactation consultants were really great (I had a tough time BFing my first), checking in a lot and offering classes and help whenever I needed it. The whole team was really supportive of a med-free birth (even with Group B strep and antibiotics...) and were really relaxed - letting me eat and drink whatever I wanted and not pushing me to do anything I didn't want to do.They do not have the option for the baby to room out - no nursery at all, but that worked really well for us.

I so miss my home DMV!!!! Anyway, look at INOVA Alexandria or INOVA Fairfax Hospital to deliver. Don't know much about Smiley. Atleast 90% of the kids in our family including self were born at Fairfax.
Lets Go SKINS! NATS! CAPS! WIZARDS! Again I miss my home area but enjoying the Florida sunshine!
