Newborn rock and play sleeper for overnight sleep?

Just a quick intro, I've been lurking here for a while and would first like to introduce myself before diving straight into a question. HIIIIIIII ladies, we're so close to the finish line and I've enjoyed the numerous threads and helpful knowledge u all bring to the table. I'm due dec 18th with a boy and couldn't be more excited/nervous/anxious for a healthy beautiful baby.

But anyway onto the question. So I've been reading reviews on the newborn rock and play sleeper and I've seen a lot of women state that they've let their newborn sleep in it over night. That was pretty much what I was planning to do. When I tell my friends and family this they're all alarmed and screaming that this is not safe for baby to sleep in overnight. It looks pretty secure to me honestly and it'll be right next to my bed somewhat like a bassinet. I do still have a bassinet but I don't get what the big deal is. Of course safety for my baby comes first, but is it really crazy of me to be ok with him sleeping in this overnight?

I'd just like some personal opinions. Maybe I misread and it's not meant to be used for long periods of time for sleep. Thanks!

They are not recommended for overnight sleep. Babies need to be able to lay flat with their legs can be extended. Then there's also the issue of the rock in play causing flathead.
In addition to all of that, in the rock and play baby often sleeps chin to chest, which is a SIDS risk factor.

It is fine for naps, but I would not let my baby in it overnight unless there is some medical condition which required him to sleep inclined.

  • Im also a FTM and debated for a while on newborn sleeping arrangements it was between a RnP or the bassinet topper on the PackNPlay.. I nannied for a family with twins and their twins slept in them over night next to mom and dads bed and then they were perfect for me to carry downstairs during the day for nap time. So I really loved the portability and convenience of it, and it being much smaller than a bassinet or a PnP I have purchased one myself and plan to use this in place of a bassinet/co-sleeper. I think technically they are not recommend for overnight sleep but I know tons of mommas who use them now with no harm done.
  • The only thing my son would sleep in when he was first born was his rock n play I loved it and plan on getting another one for this baby. Its also really nice that its super compact if you have a small room and travels very well
  • Thanks a lot! The good thing is that I do have a bassinet as well so he can definitely go in there should there be any kind of safety risk. But I mostly wanted the rock n play IN CASE he did have acid reflux or a medical reason to be on an incline. Just wanted the option to be prepared

Most people end up having the baby sleep in a RNP because of Reflux. But try other things first overnight. Sometimes they have a really hard time adjusting to sleeping flat after getting used to an incline. But if the kid has reflux sleeping at an incline is necessary. But they also make wedges for the mattress in that case too.

  • My LO will sleep in a rock n play.

My older son had acid reflux and I had to prop him up at a steep incline with blankets under his bassinet mattress. He always ended up sliding down and sideways and it never felt safe to me (I wish I had known the rock n play existed then!).

My second son had a ton of sinus drainage issues and congestion so it was recommended that I prop him up to sleep as well. The rock n play was perfect. He slept very well and could actually breathe comfortably. He didn't have any issues transitioning to sleeping flat and didn't have a flat head or anything.
  • Yes I've thought of a wedge as well. I guess I could of course test the bassinet/rnp to see which works best. I'll also see if my doctor has any opinions on this as well because like I said, it's definitely safety first and if it's a SIDS risk than its absolutely out the picture. I also don't want to go in assuming, worst case scenario that he will have acid reflux and driving myself nuts about it lol. But all of ur opinions are really helpful. This is why I love this board :)
  • ds#2 ended up in the RNP for 5 months.  He had horrible reflux and what turned out to be a milk protein allergy.  He literally spit up every 5 minutes.  We had a difficult time transitioning him to flat at that point.

I will not be using the RNP this time around unless we have a similar issue.

  • We used it everyday for 5months and our son is fine. Due to his reflux that was the ONLY way he would sleep so that's what we didn't. He slept in our room for 5 months and transitioned just fine to his crib.
  • My daughter slept in hers for 7 months right beside my side of the bed, because I was too paranoid to move her to her own room/crib. Also, as a previous poster said DD had reflux and it really helped.  I will not do the same with DS. We got a new one for him and I will use it (they're extremely portable and easy to take along for naps when you're at someone else's house) BUT DD got so used to the tight cozy cradling and the incline that it made it very hard for her to adjust to sleeping flat in her crib. So, we won't use it nearly as long this time for overnight but I definitely loved it. Make sure to take the cloth cover off and wash it regularly as they were recalled for mold growing on the plastic bed part a couple of years ago.
  • ITA with PPs.  I would not use one overnight unless absolutely necessary, mostly for the SIDS risk but also because I don't want to have to transition the baby to a flat sleeping surface later.  I am buying the RNP bassinet instead, which lays flat.

  • I had a hard time deciding on this one too. I did end up buying it... A lot of the reviews I read said if you let them stay in it all the time it would affect their head shape and ultimately lead to them having to wear a helmet and needing physical therapy!! (Wtf) I did tons of research, its just as safe as any other sleeper, use in moderation. Don't stick LO in there all the time, and without a head support .. car seats and cribs can do the same thing. Online reviews are the devil. Lol

I got the rock n play. My LO will be just fine.
