Migraines wont go away

Hey ladies! So im 16.5 weeks and for the past week i've been getting horrible migraines that literally wont go away. I will take some tylenol and they will lessen for an hour or so, but then come back full force. This has been happening nonstop for a week, my doctor gave me acetamenaphan with codine last week and when i took it my headache got much worse. I just dont know what to do at this point and Im desperete for these headaches to stop.

  • I was getting migraines a couple weeks ago my dr gave me Tylenol with caffeine and something else - it helped but it completely knocks me out for a good 3 hours :( thankfully I've only had to take that medicine twice. Hopefully your migraines go away soon! :)
  • Have you thought about a chiropractor? I know several women who swear by it to relieve migraines during pregnancy.

Are you drinking caffeine? For a 2 extra strength Tylenol, small cup of coffee, a bottle of water, and rest helps.
  • In addition to what PPs have suggested, I would avoid any sort of "screen time" as much as possible. I get migraines when not pregnant (some minor headaches during pregnancy but feeling lucky not to have had a migraine so far) and in addition to cool cloths and medicine this helps them ease up faster. Hope yours get better soon!

  • Have you tried a hot wash cloth to the forehead? That always helps me.

I was reading today how lots of women who get migraines get them less during pregnancy and onlt some get them more. Always on the wrong side of statistics.

I have been surprised at how many people have said to me "oh...I thought they went away when you are pregnant. You're still getting them?!"
Cue me holding back the urge to scream yes in their face.

OP I feel you. What has worked for me is what seems the simplist. Lying/sleeping in a dark room with a cold compress. Drink something with caffeine. Lots and lots of water. Sometimes a shower with essential oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint help too. Hang in there sweetie...if they get really really bad talk to your OB about other options too!

  • I've been probe to migraines and tension headaches. What's been working for me, mostly... Soda (I don't like coffee), Tylenol/excedrin, and a cold pack around the back of my neck. And go to sleep.

  • These migraines recently happened to me and lasted about 9 days with the same amount of pain and not going away! Heat pads for my back and neck, Tylenol, ice pack for my head, caffeine, tons of water and it's finally gone! I feel for you, worst head pain of my life! My ob gyn said they can last up to two weeks during the second trimester :((
  • Mine have been bad too and I am totally missing the Aleve I take when not preggo. However, are you sure they aren't sinus related? Tylenol won't touch my headaches but Claritin works like a charm and is a Cat B. I don't take them everyday but only when I feel extra pressure in my sinuses or extra sniffly or I feel a headache coming on. They really help for the allergy/sinus related ones.

Have you tried peppermint essential oil?  That is the only thing that works for me.  I had a migraine for 3 days 2 weeks ago and it was horrible.  a cold rag, peppermint EO, and some caffeine helped a little bit.  If they keep getting worse or you are having the time you need to let your OB know.

I agree with the peppermint suggestion. I had a migraine last Friday. I tried aroma therapy plus a massage and a heat patch and my migraine was gone the next morning. Something to consider.
  • caffeine, no screen time, darkened room, get the room on the colder side if you can, and an ice pack where the pain seems to be concentrating. (for me it's usually my left eye.)

  • I would definitely at least try visiting a chiropractor - my neck is messed up at the best of times, and gives me terrible headaches/migraines even when not pregnant. Now that I'm pregnant, my back is more misaligned than ever and my neck is even more sensitive. The chiropractor helps keep me aligned and keeps the headaches at bay. My doctor did actually okay me to take ibuprofen/advil for when the migraines are too bad. I've only taken it a few times just to be cautious, but he said there wasn't any evidence that it caused harm, especially during the second trimester. It wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor just to see what they say.
  • Interesting timing of this post, as I am home sick from work today and day 2 of this migraine. The guilt of missing a day makes it even worse. Now I will only have 21 paid maternity days. Sigh..........
  • Same. I've always had terrible headaches but they've intensified so much since being pregnant.. Chiropractic has made a huge huge difference for me though.
  • I usually try to chug a bottle of water, sip some coffee, and take a couple of Tylenol. I also put a bunch of rice in a sock and heat it up in the microwave as a homemade heat pack. It feels nice on my neck and usually helps! Hope you feel better soon!
  • Totally understand!! If I don't have a migraine it seems I have a headache! My dr told me I could take excedrine migraine until 34 weeks. Usually Tylenol and a cup of something with caffeine helps quite a bit. Hope u all find some relief as I know how miserable it is.
  • I hope they lessen soon!  I would get occasional migraines before I got pregnant (usually brought on by intense exercise).  Now I've had 1 or 2 throughout my pregnancy.  I'm 19 weeks today and for the past few weeks have been getting nearly daily headaches (not full on migraines).  I upped my water intake, thinking dehydration might be the culprit.  That didn't help but increasing my protein did.  I think I require a lot more protein being pregnant so I need to get into the habit of having high protein snacks handy.  So there could be some imbalance that is causing them for you (maybe water, diet, or sleep).  I hope you feel better soon!

    Jerks.
....I'm totally a lurker and feel guilty jumping in but have to comment...

My OB told me that some recent studies have shown that women who suffer from migraines are also at an increased risk for hyperemesis! You have no idea how many times I've cursed the unfairness of that!

From a migraine sufferer with severe HG (currently on a PICC line/daily TPN and fluids) BUT hasn't had a migraine since getting pregnant, my sympathies are with you. HG is awful but knowing the pain of migraines, I feel for you!
  • I dealt with that (on a much smaller scale) in my last pregnancy and a friend of mine who is really into nutrition suggested I up my healthy fats intake. It helped a ton! Ex: coconut oil, olive oil, olives, avocado, nuts, nut butters, full-fat dairy products, etc. Good luck!
