Anyone else winterizing an old home?

We've already put film over the old windows and did some weather-stripping around the doors but I was wondering if anyone else has an tips or tricks that worked for them? We also have wood floors, no carpet so I know we're losing heat that way too. Last year I didn't care so much because I just wore sweats and a long-sleeve shirt at home but I'm worried about it being cold for our LO.

Re: Anyone else winterizing an old home?

  • Some throw rugs over the wood floors? We have an old house too with no carpeting not really going to keep the heat in better but might be a little warmer on your feet. Weve also gotten the heat saving curtains which has helped

  • DS has thin curtains so DH put up some thick, solid color blankets over his windows but underneath the curtains.  It seemed to help a lot although it drove me crazy because it didn't let the light in.

Area rugs on the floors seem to help.

We also got one of those quartz heaters for our main living area.

Plastic on windows. Some thow rugs. Furnace cleaning & inspection. Humidifier helps. For rooms that aren't as well insulated as others we keep the door closed and keep a ceramic space heater in there for when we needed it.

Make sure your pipes have insulation wrap especially exposed ones or ones near the exterior of the building.

We put out spare towels on the window sills.

Door jam stuff was hit or miss with regards to size and the ability to open/close the door.

  • Our house is an old 100 year old farm house so we hate winter. It's so hard to heat and we have an oil furnace. We spent over $4000 to heat our house just last winter. This year we went and bought a pellet stove so we aren't using as much heating oil and it's wonderful! We also put huge area rugs on the floors and put the plastic on our windows to help keep the heat in. Space heaters help in rooms that don't have as much insulation, like our bedrooms, but we only run them on low while we are sleeping.

Other than that we just pray it's not super cold out and have tons of blankets/throws to cover up with. Winter stinks!

  • If you aren't using particular rooms, you can shut the door and block off the vents to those rooms so the heat gets distributed more freely to the open rooms.  I think Eclipse is a brand of insulated curtains, if you have sliding doors or the large windows like PP's have said, definitely try them out, they made a huge difference in our house.  Lots of rugs help, maybe even another layer of insulation in your attic would make a huge difference (if you have this option).

  • Our house was build in 1892 and we have the original wood windows that we can't replace due to law for preservation of historic homes in our area. We just put in copper weather stripping in all our windows and doors and it has made a world of difference! They are all air tight and no plastic over the windows this year!

We did have a guy do it that specializes in historic homes and windows come out to put them all in. It took about 2 weeks but we have a shit ton of windows.
