Traveling with pumped supply.

We are traveling to see my IL tomorrow. It is a 5 hour trip. I mostly BF, but I have pumped bottles to supplement if she doesn't get enough. Anyone have any suggestions on traveling with already pumped milk? Would I just be better off to make bottles as I go? I am a bit overwhelmed at the idea of all this so any tips would help.

TIA for any advice need to calm my anxiety!

Re: Traveling with pumped supply.

  • Bring your manual pump if you have one, so that you can pump in the car if LO sleeps soundly in her seat. Or an adapter so that you can plug in your pump. Nurse just before you leave and if you don't stop, when you get there.

It's not recommended to give bottles in the carseat while the car is moving. It IS recommended to get LO out of her seat every couple of hours (if she's awake, of course), so nursing instead of bottle feeding can be easier.

As far as taking milk, that's up to you, but it may take the pressure off to have some along instead of relying on pumping, if you're definitely going to need it.

I've traveled all over the place with pumped milk including multiple plane trips while EPing for DD1. If you are BFing what @Emerald27‌ says about stopping to BF is probably easiest. But if you generally need to supplement I would make up a bottle with how much you normally need to supplement and have it ready to go and leave any extra in the storage bottles. Bring it in a lunch bag and ice pack. Though you can store it at room temp for several hours if you know you are going to use it. Target had cheap tall lunch bags that fit my DB bottles perfectly. I say to make up a bottle because your baby is likely not used to cold milk so you will have to pull it out a little early so it's not so cold.

My Ameda pump has batteries and I brought that thing everywhere.

  • Awesome! Thanks ladies. I think I will feed her right before we leave and then pump too so I have some with me. I think I will leave our already pumped and in the fridge supply at home.
