I'm a FTM due in January and have seen a lot of nursing camis (store bought or dit) that you can wear under your regular shirts to not expose your belly while breastfeeding in public. My question is why you can't just pull down the neck of a regular cami to get the same effect? Or can you? I tried on a forever 21 cami with a nursing bra I have and it seems to work okwl when I pull it down (it's stretchy), but I am wondering why people don't just do this? Thanks for the advice!
Re: Nursing Cami vs. Regular Cami
TTC #1 since 2007. Dx: Unexplained infertility. 4 IUIs in 2008 = BFN. IVF #1 07/09. DD #1 born April 2010 (40w5d).
TTC #2 since 2011. Dx: Endometriosis and hypothyroidism. 2 FETs in 2012, BFP 6/12 but m/c @ 7 weeks. IVF #2 06/13. DD #2 born March 2014 (40w1d).
That said, I do also have a few camis with built in shelf bras that I also use for nursing (sans nursing bra). They work well and I can even put cloth breast pads in for leaks. But if you have really large breasts that might not be enough support.
I got a 2-pack for $30 from h&m that were pretty decent. Some moms really like having the option to lift up a layer while still covering their bellies but I found pulling down the neckline so much easier. If I NIP, I wore LO so pulling down was also easier than pulling up.
My boobs never got big enough to do that even with BFing so to have any sort of access to a boob I have to unclip the top of the nursing cami.
IMO it's SOOO convenient! I would never want to mess around with a regular cami like that. Target and Walmart sell some really great, cheap ass nursing camis. I would go with those.
