Hats & Mittens/Gloves-Keep them on?

DS will keep his hat on if we are at a playground and he is running around.  But, if he is in his stroller, he yanks off his hat and mittens right after I put them on. How do you get your LO to keep them on? Are there any tricks I need to know about? Or do I just need to get over it and just him be? He has to be cold though!

Re: Hats & Mittens/Gloves-Keep them on?

  • We just put the hood on P's coat over his head.  He has never tolerated a hat for more than a few minutes.  He will leave mittens/gloves on, but chews on them to point where they're pretty wet and therefore not really doing their job.

  • @byjove03  I've tried draping the blanket over his hands, but that triggers a "must get this entire thing off of me now" reaction, so I've just kept it over his body and let his hands be free.  I'll see about a different fabric for his hat.
  • Thanks for the tips! I'll try distracting first with his current hat, then move to the hood.  Maybe that is why he will keep it on at the playground, he has other things to think about and do.  If that doesn't work, I'll try a different fabric hat that clasps at the chin.

  • I found this coat that has the flip over mitten things attached to the sleeves. She chews on them but doesn't get mad about it. I think my sister used long tube socks that went up to my nieces armpits and then put her coat on and it would take her quite awhile to work those socks off of her hands.

We do the distraction thing with hats too. I wait until we are outside and then put it on her as fast as I can while she's busy trying to eat a rock or something.
LOL at the tube socks :D

We use hats with laces, so she tugs at them, realizes they don't come off, and then just resigns herself to it.
I've noticed she hates tight hats, though, and will tolerate loose ones. So maybe try different sizes/textures?

As to mittens, she's not complained yet. Now I know there's the possibility of her rebelling against those, I'll have to come up with a contingency plan.

  • Another for a bigger hat. G has a large head and only tolerates a big monster hat that we have.
As far as mittens he has trouble getting them off. I do have a teddy bear that warms up nice inthe microwave that I plan on taking along for car rides in the winter. Something nice and warm for him to hold.

  • I have a J.J. Cole bunting bag type thing for the stroller. It zips up pretty high and LO stays warm and he keeps his hands inside for the most part.
  • Here's a pic from last weekend when I was out trying to kick your arse on Fitbit!
  • I take my advice back. I don't need to be giving you any ideas ;)
  • @haddocky @mainerocks  Do the bundle me's fit all strollers?  I have the Britax B-Agile.  I can't find that info on their website.

@Stacey099  that teddy bear sounds neat!
  • I mean... it fits. It has a back where you can put the straps through and it velcro's so I would say that it would fit most every stroller. Aside from the top of the bag is supposed to go like over the back of the seat to keep it up and that part doesn't work on mine. It's fine though because with LO sitting on the bunting and the straps going through the back make it stay up just fine.
  • Got it.  Thanks @haddocky
  • Now don't buy one because I need you to sit inside. It's a terrible bunting and it gave my LO a rash and made him not STTN. It came infested with fleas and the zipper broke after one day.

    Bahahahaha.  You are crazy.  :)
  • Hats are touch and go here. Usually it takes around fifteen to twenty minutes of convincing him it's ok to leave it on and then we are usually good.

He loves mittens. He prefers using socks as mittens over real mittens but meh.
