Canadian mamas: mat leave

Hey Canadian mamas, question for anyone who has ever applied for government mat leave benefits before.

I do not get company top up so I am relying on government mat leave from the get go.

My question is: if I am overdue, when do/can I apply for these benefits? As of the day my company has on paper as my EDD (as I am Obvi not working any longer) or after baby is born?

Any insight would he awesome!

You need to it the last day worked as you can take up to 8 weeks maternity leave before baby is born. Delaying applying MAY mean you lose benefits.

You apply the day after your last day of work. Don't worry about your EDD. You go with what your ROE says. It will take about a month to get your first cheque and they will back pay you :)

  • Yeah I was definitely thinking about matching the ROE. I hate dealing with any sort of EI type stuff...it's so confusing and it's impossible to get a hold of humans to answer the questions lol. Thanks ladies
  • @Curlyfries851‌ keep pressing 0 until you get a person. Don't bother going through the options. I did the once and was just going through options for almost 2 hours. It's ridiculous.

Good to know. Since I'm already past due I will be applying tomorrow. Wish me luck lol
  • @Jatpa003‌ it was 12 weeks when I had N 16 months ago. Has it changed to 8?!
  • flutterbuggie I don't think the date you apply is that big of a deal.   But you need to put the correct date of the last day that you are paid.  (Trust me, I made the mistake of putting the last day worked... And I had a month's vacation to use up...  So that slowed my application a fair bit.)

  • I just sent them a letter after my screw up.   But a phone call might get quicker results!  GL!!

According to the GOC service Canada website and the lady I finally got to talk to on the phone it is 8 weeks now. (I honestly had no idea it use to be 12)
  • Best of luck to everyone applying, I never did get through to talk to a real person when I did it last month. I think I pressed 0 and it hung up on me lol. I did apply the morning after my last day of work but it took my employer an entire month to get my ROE to me. And they didn't send it to Service Canada, they sent it to me! I was seriously breathing down their necks to get it to me. When I finally did I rushed in, in person, the next morning. That was last Friday. This past Thursday a week later they apparently approved an amount which hasn't been deposited yet. I hope it's there in the morning.
All that to say, seriously, good luck!
  • This may be too late for many of you, but I just went to Service Canada (at my local mall) and talked to an agent re: date to put down when applying for mat leave. She told me that I need to put down my last day worked regardless of when I was paid until. She said that when my employer sends my ROE it will state when my last pay was and my EI will be adjusted accordingly. For what it's worth, I worked until Oct. 17th, but was paid up to today. I really hope this lady knows what she was talking about!!!

It's a bit annoying that there are two different stories on this!!

I think the date on the ROE is the key. My last day actually worked was June 29. Last day paid for was July 29. My ROE said the July date so I guess that is what they wanted my file to go by.

Anyway, once the money starts coming in any confusion and frustration totally melts away! ;)

  • @moroccojade‌ Dealing with service Canada in general is frustrating! I'm going to make a phone call and see if what they say over the phone matches what the lady told me in person. It's unfortunate that I can't just trust what they say, but I've been led astray by them in the past :(
