November 2014 Moms

What do you wish you had?

This one is for any already moms...Realizing I'm less than 3 weeks from my due date, things are starting to feel way more real around here. I'm curious...what things do you wish you would have had at home waiting for you when you came home from the hospital? Anything you really wish you would have packed for the hospital that you didn't?

  • Totally agree with the snacks that muchlygen mentioned. I have sent my husband out for granola bars twice and I've been home a week. BF'ing takes it out of you quick. Also, all the feminine hygiene stuff. I had two packs of pads but needed more already and some lighter ones than the huge ass diapers so get a few different kinds. Easy to prep meals, all the regular household supplies (tp, milk, detergent, pet food etc) so that you don't have to hike to the store.

As far as the hospital goes I hardly used anything in my suitcase. What I did use was my pjs, slippers, toiletries, phone/iPad/chargers, and going home outfit. I could have left all the rest at home. The hospital provided anything I could think of and then some.

  • @flutterbuggie‌ I hated the mesh underwear! After my cs, I needed DH's help to get the underwear and pads on just right. Always has just started making diapers, I got a packages and I loved them infinitely more than the pads and the mesh underwear.
  • @flutterbuggie What kind of Depends? I'm looking at Amazon and see:
    Depend Maximum Absorbency
    Depend Regular Absorbency
    Depend Silhouette

Also, thoughts on size? It looks like the S/M would be fine for the normal kind but that the Silhouette run small. I'm 5'7" or 5'8" and have no idea what I'll weigh postpartum. I used to be a size 4/6 but have gained close to 50 lbs =).

  • yes please elaborate on pads/hygiene stuff!  It's been years since I've used a pad, I know nothing about what I'll need!
  • My most surprising thing I liked that the hospital provided was a huge water container with a straw. It was nice not to have to refill it that often and to be able to just suck down the massive amounts of water I wanted postpartum. During breastfeeding, especially.

Also, this wasn't for me, but I brought blankets for my support people. The hospital had fairly nice ones, but mine were fleece and just more comfy for them.

  • Now I'm even more excited for my depends! I'm 5'10 and was last weighed at 215 during my final day pregnant so I am hoping the large fits (I have super wide hips size 14 before baby tho) these pads WILL NOT stick to the mesh panties.

Also ladies, invest as them as I have learned the hard way my bladder muscles are very weak and I end peeing myself a little before I can make it to the bathroom in time a lot.
@lissydee‌ should this improve over time? I'm fearful to go anywhere now

I thought I had ruined something down there during delivery when I first got out of bed to go to the bathroom as I had ZERO bladder control. Luckily that got better quick and by 5-6 days pp I didn't have that issue anymore.

  • - our hospital doesn't give out pacifiers. I found it enormously helpful to have brought one from home.

+ This. Our hospital didn't give out pacifiers either, and I was also glad we brought some from home!

  • Favorite nursing tanks?
  • I'm still in the hospital from Tuesday night and I'm most glad to have:
    -boppy for feeding
    -my own nonskid fuzzy socks
    -towel, shampoo, conditioner
    -face wipes

I have found its best to play dumb so they give you extras of:
    -ice pads
    -their huge diaper pads
-extra puppy pads to lay over a seat or bed
    -lanolin samples
-bendy straws (I just like them)

During labor I wish I had:
-an easy water bottle to use
-a sweatband I could have soaked in cold water to wear
-more flavors of jello (they only had sugar free orange)

    Didn't need:
    -magazines
    -my contacts
    -blow dryer
    -hot water bottle

  • @LivinCA I got the Totes brand. Amazon has a lot of brands if you search for slipper socks or hospital socks.

  • What about items for partner? Change of clothing is in my bag in case our delivery goes long after 11pm or midnight.
Sibling shirts are with me in my bag so know one forgets them or it's too early/late. I plan on just having them pop them on when arrive to meet new brother!
Also snacks & tea we both like. With our first 2 kids cafeteria closed at a certain time so if you have a night/late birth don't be stuck eating vendening machine food!!!

  • So you gals are wearing depends instead of pads? I broke my coccyx with my son and peed on the couch cuz I couldn't get up fast enough. I hate most pads because they irritate my skin and like the big fat ones the hospital has. So I keep looking for something like those but have yet to find some.
