Thyroid problems

So after they ran my blood work at my first appointment they called and have put me on thyroid meds it has made me concerned. But I am not finding a ton of information on it. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problems and what you know about it?

Re: Thyroid problems

  • I just got the call yesterday about my labs, and they said my thyroid is functioning a tad low for pregnancy. I was at a 4.5 and she wants that number at 3.5, so I go pick up my Synthroid from the pharmacy after work. My OB didn't seem super concerned and said I would start feeling better once it got in my system. She's putting me on the lowest available dose.

I did a little Dr. Googling last night about it. It's always hard to know what to trust, but it seems like some of the bigger issues are having a higher risk of miscarriage and developmental problems, depending on how severe the thyroid problem is. My OB isn't even willing to call mine hypothyroidism at this point, so if she's not worried, I'm trusting her.

I really wasn't aware that I was feeling particularly bad for someone in their first trimester, especially based on the daily symptoms thread. But if this stuff gives me some pep back in my step, I'm game.

  • Yep, just take the meds - it's not a big deal and very common. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism before I started TTC, though I never noticed any of the common symptoms (fatigue, dry skin/hair, digestion issues) so it was minor to begin with. I've had my meds adjusted since getting pregnant, and the endocrinologist will continue to monitor throughout pregnancy. It is important as untreated hypothyroidism has been linked to premature birth and miscarriage.

Best of luck to you, but don't worry - it's a common problem and very manageable!

  • So the thyroid and the hormones it produces help regulate pregnancy and are regulated by pregnancy.  It's not uncommon to have thyroid issues during pregnancy, whether you had them before or not.  Try not to stress too much about it, it's easily handled with medication, and they'll just keep an eye on it.  One of my best friends had thyroid cancer back in 2009, and has been on medication ever since.  She had a very healthy baby boy back in 2011.  I have another friend who has been on thyroid meds since 2003 and she has 3 kids!

@finchfeeder80 - I did the same googling when they thought I had a thyroid issue, and I talked to my doctor about the whole miscarriage thing and she was surprised by that.  She said that's not really an issue with thyroid problems.  It can affect development because of whether the baby is getting what it needs, but again, very easily controlled with medication.  Hope your meds start making you feel better soon!

blu-eyedwife Thanks! I read the biggest reason that some people without a pre-existing thyroid sometimes have problems during pregnancy is because you are not supporting yourself, your higher metabolism and the baby's. But my doc is very level headed and I trust her, she's never done me wrong as my GYN, so if she says this will help, I'm willing!

    Edited to fix tag.
