Thanksgiving Dinner

The other GTKY got me thinking.

What does a traditional Thanksgiving table at your families dinner look like? What is served? Is there anything out of the ordinary that your family does that's not a traditional Thanksgiving dish?

Re: Thanksgiving Dinner

  • All this Thanksgiving talk is making me sooooo hungry...

In my family, I'd say we're pretty traditional... We do turkey, corn, potatoes, polish sausage, rolls, green bean casserole (yuck), and homemade stuffing.

The homemade stuffing is what I look forward to the absolute most.. it is so amazing!

My family had some traditional and some not so traditional offerings that the table. We of course had turkey, homemade gravy (my mom's is so yummy), homemade cranberry sauce (best ever!), mashed potatoes, roasted brussel sprouts and spinach souffle. She would also make stuffing (which to me is the grossest stuff ever) and would actually stuff the turkey with it (plus some extra in a dish).  Mom would add a few weird dishes here and there but I can't remember exactly what.  She always liked to experiment.

  • We usually eat around 4:00 after snacking all day. Dinner is pretty traditional - turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with candied marshmallows, canned cranberry sauce (my fave!), and rolls. I love it! I haven't made the move to maternity clothes yet but I may need to just for this occasion!

  • We do turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans etc. I guess normal thanksgiving food.

BUT because I'm Italian at every holiday we have spaghetti and meatballs or lasagna. :) my hubby hates "Thanksgiving food" and loves that I bring Italian food to every holiday.
  • I can't believe no one has mentioned squash. My grandmother bakes it in the oven then mashes it up and throws in some brown sugar. It's to die for!
  • I think the one odd thing we have is something my mom calls peanut salad.  It's such a weird, and mostly disgusting sounding, combination of blended together dry roasted peanuts, carrots, pickles, hard boiled eggs and mayo.  It sounds gross and looks even grosser and yet I eat it every year.

Other than that, I think we're pretty traditional in having turkey, giblet stuffing and gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole (made with sour cream, NOT cream of mushroom soup), sweet potatoes, cranberries and dinner rolls.  Oh, and I make a wicked corn pudding.  For dessert we have pumpkin and pecan pie although I would prefer an apple pie with a crumbly top.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • We always have the same meal and I'm addicted to it. I refuse to go to anyone else's for Thanksgiving. I'm vegan, so I don't each the turkey, but everything else is fair game:

    Mashed potatoes
Puréed butternut squash and sweet potato mix (this is heavenly)
Cornbread stuffing with celery and sage
    Rolls
3 kinds of cranberry sauce - canned for my sister, homemade whole sauce by my mom, homemade raw cranberry/kumquat relish from my dad
    Sautéed pearl onions
Roasted Brussels sprouts with balsamic vinegar
    Wild rice and sautéed mushrooms
    Pumpkin pie (by me)
Apple cranberry pie (by my mom)
Mulled wine, hot cider, brandy for after dinner

My dad and I do almost all of the cooking. It's one of my favorite things to look forward to all year, spending the day in the kitchen with him.
Favorite fall activity: roasting pumpkin seeds!

  • I think pretty typical for a southern thanksgiving. Probably a little different than other regions.

We usually have a fried and roasted turkey, Mac and cheese, broccoli cheese casserole, sweet potato casserole, cornbread dressing, my mil makes a pasta salad which isn't really traditional here, pecan pie, buttermilk pie, sweet potato (not pumpkin) pie.

Mostly butter and sugar; you know southern staples ;)

  • We do most of the traditional stuff:
    Turkey
    Stuffing
    Mashed Potatoes
    Yams
    Cranberry sauce (from the can)
    Rolls
    Macaroni salad
    Corn (frozen, not canned)
    Gravy (made from turkey drippings)
    Pumpkin pie

DH's family likes to add in green bean casserole, maybe a roast, and sometimes a salmon.

I'm so freakin excited for Thanksgiving meals!

  • I am starving after reading this thread.

We have Thanksgiving lunch with my family and dinner with my in-laws and both are pretty traditional. My MIL does serve a crab dip which is a little different but is amazing.

  • Thanksgiving is my FAVORITE holiday!  We always go to my IL which I love, but this year we almost had to go out to a restaurant bc they are remolding their kitchen.  I told them we could host at our house.  My favorite is the leftovers.  We are very traditional and usually have Turkey, mashers, gravy, rolls, dressing, green beans with butter and mushrooms, canned cranberries, green salad, pumpkin pie.  I know I am forgetting some stuff, but those are the things I eat so all that I can remember.  I have been talking about Thanksgiving for a week now.  I hate that it is "late" this year.
  • We are very untraditional for TG. A couple years (including this one), we drive to Las Vegas to stay with MIL and will hit up a nice buffet and maybe a friends house.

Last year we got a hotel room in San Fransisco and spent TG walking around the wharf. We found an awesome Indian Restaurant/Irish Bar and proceeded to get drunk and make new friends. Such a great time.

Other years we may go to a friends house. If I do cook, I try for fresh ideas on traditional dishes. Like tamales with turkey, cranberry sauce, and gravy. Yum.

Does it turn out like a custard or cream pie? I am intrigued by this...
It's custardy. This is a blog post on it

  • This is so fascinating. I've never had corn at my thanksgiving meal. We didn't grow up eating candied yams either. I've also never had a pecan pie in my life.

  • I eat with 35 to 40 people so we stick to the traditional stuff. A bunch of us bring desserts and although we do have the traditional pumpkin and apple pies we also spice things up. Last year I brought these and they were a hit!

  • We live across the country from family so we do thanksgiving just us and a few friends ....whoever wants to join. I host because I want the leftovers and if I didn't host would just make a separate meal just for leftovers.

We are mostly traditional but I like to try different versions of side dishes usually try to make them a little healthier . We always have turkey (I do a brine) stuffing( this I dont change up because it is my mom's recipie and it is amazing) mashed potatos , rolls, sweet potato dish of some kind , green bean or brussle sprout dish , home made cranberry sauce and then pumpkin roll and pumpkin pie.

  • My aunt always makes this awesome broken glass jello salad that is basically just jello jiggler squares in a bunch of whipped cream and it's AMAZING especially because I only get to eat it a couple times a year! It looks like this but in a big bowl without the crust: image

I've never had a pecan pie in my life either. It's not popular here at all.
