I was just wondering as a FTM, how do I know when it's time to change the nipple size for the bottle? From size 1 to size 2? There are guidelines on the package for age range, but other than that what should I use as my deciding factor?
we switched a little early, but it was because she was getting bored with the slower flow nipple and wouldn't eat as much. We cautiously tried the level two a few times and she did so much better, so we never turned back.
eta she's on ebm. (I ep)
DD was FF and never went over level 1. She would suck her bottle down in 10 minutes plus burping every two ounces. Once I started adding rice cereal to her bottles I cut the nipples, which I only did two weeks before she started solids. When she started solids I didn't put quite so much cereal in her bottle so I didn't have to cut anymore nipples she could drink it through a level 1. It slowed her down but she still sucked a bottle down in 15-20 minutes. I think it also depends on how your LO eats. If they suck so hard the nipple collapses or they just get bored with slow flow that they just quit eating then you should get a level 2.
You can kinda hear LO sucking funny if the flow is too fast. At least my LO makes funny sounds!! It's sort of like she isn't getting to take a breath between drinks, like she's trying to shotgun her milk! Lol
My nephew is over a year old and is still on level one because any time they went to a larger nipple he would suck the milk down so fast and then completely lose his mind because his milk was gone.

everything I've seen says cutting the nipples is a BIG no-no. They make specific nipples (y-cut I believe) for if you add rice cereal. Cutting the nipples is a choking hazard.

This exactly. You should get a different nipple if you add cereal.
@JustCricket I've never seen those nipple, I've never even heard of them. I'm sure chocking has happened, but I cut a X in it so nothing was actually cut off.
I just went and bought level 2 nipples today. I'm breastfeeding but we're trying to get LO use to bottles since going back to work in a couple weeks. I have a really fast let down and he eats in 5 to 10 minutes but was taking 20 minutes plus and fussing on bottle so hoping that he'll do better with the level 2 nipples.

I know exactly what you were saying, it's still a choking hazard.
