White spot on babies heart?

I had my 18 week uktrasound yesterday to find out the babies gender. (It's a girl) but at the end of the ultrasound the nurse told us that she found a white spot on the babies heart also known as a soft marker for Down syndrome. She said everything else looked completely normal and I really have nothing to worry about but as a first time mom I'm obviously very nervous and worried! Just wanted to know if anyone else has gone through this?

  • Wait the ultrasound tech told you this? Not your OB? Where you not able to ask your OB this question?

  • No I met with genetics earlier in my pregnancy because my ob was concerned about a medication I was on and they scheduled my 18-20 week ultrasound at my hospital instead of at my clinic.
  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I would definitely call your OB and see if they got the results from the ultrasound so you can ask about it. I hope you get some answers soon!

  • I know you are nervous, but it sounds like everything else looked to be on point, so that's a great start. As pp have said, call your OB and ask them every question you can think of. That is what they are there for. Fingers crossed for you that all is well. Keep us posted!

  • Have you had any bloodwork done to screen for Down syndrome?

An echogenic intracardiac focus can be a soft marker for Downs. My OB found on at my ultrasound on Monday as well as shorter limbs. Also my bloodwork came back at having a 1:80 chance of Down Syndrome, and then with those soft markers it went to 1:40. My OB assured me that she personally thought that the echogenic spot should be removed from the soft markers because they are very common to see in a totally healthy baby and then they disappear on their own. If that's all they found then try not to worry about it.
  • I haven't had any bloodwork done for that.
  • Sorry to hear your going through this.  I would ask to have the Harmony, or Panorama blood test done to tell you if its Downs and ease your mind.  Just a simple blood test, that insurance should pay for if its considered a risk

  • This thread says "answered," but I thought I'd go ahead and give my experience. With my first pregnancy my we were told my son had an echogenic focus (a white spot/calcification on the heart). My OB also told us it was a "soft marker" for down syndrome. He said they are finding out it is more common than originally thought, and probably shouldn't even be considered a soft marker. Not a concern unless matched with another marker. We had another anatomy scan at 28 weeks to check again for abnormalities. The spot was still there, but nothing else was found. They will probably offer further testing, but we declined. After researching I did feel better, but it was in the back of my mind until delivery. :/

  • I see that it is answered and I know nothing about this subject, but I just want to say that I hope you find out that everything is ok!
  • On Monday I had 20 week ultrasound with a high risk OB due to my autoimmune thyroid condition. Doc read ultrasounds and made note of a similar white spot/calcification in baby's heart. He said he was not concerned, that it's something he sees everyday and most often it goes away on its own. He made no mention of Downs, but he did indicate he says it appears white/thicker/calcified this early on in an effort to keep the chamber from flapping closed--that Mother Nature makes it that way by design. For what it's worth, he also said it's most frequent in Asian parents (which we're not, but whatevs). At any rate, he said it was no cause to worry, so I'm not worried. Please don't worry :)

  • Thank you all so much for your input and kind words! I feel so much better. I'll keep everyone posted!
  • Sorry for the extra stress you have right now. I suggest calling your dr and asking them about it. Determine from there what further testing can be done if needed. Best of luck!
